Hey! Fever blisters are WAY better than the other form.

You're not supposed to get either, even if they're carriers. Just like humans can't get chicken lice...

I probably could give them away since they were never cooped with any of the birds that had symptoms, but I'm so paranoid! What if someone took them, then their other birds got it from a wild bird? Or my boys were the only exception to the juveniles-don't-get-it rule? You know my luck. My boys would TOTALLY be the exception. So, I'd rather give them to someone who knows the score and is looking for meat for the freezer.

I'm totally the opposite. I would much rather butcher other people's birds.

Can someone get their blood tested for it if they wanted one? I mean you have English Orps... people love them

OK...some of us have been talking about feeding fodder to add a more nutritional supplement to feed and also to lower the amount of feed required by the chickens. I found this on a forum that AJ sent me about fodder. WARNING---It is lengthy but a lot of good info.

Many thanks to Carrie of Harmony Oaks for the info for this addenda:

Oats used to feed horses goats, etc. been treated with agermicide, - sprayed
with a product to prevent germination. This took numerous phone calls and
pressure from my feed dealer to obtain this information. - although that
they had not been labelled as such BTW- the feed was sold under the Farmer's Best
label. When they were asked to sprout, they molded instead.
ordered some oats to "seed" a pasture. They worked fine,and they were
comparibly priced . (Karen: Seed oats not easily available this time of year. I asked
at my local Agway store. They said to see a local farmer who grew seed oats, like
a dairy farm. To offer them $10.00 a bushel if they had extra. Said that price would
be enough above the price the farmer paid to seal the deal.)

I'm just going by what it says in the articles in above post and some other reading that I did and all that I read says 1 square inch per chicken is all that should be fed. My goal is to do what is best for the chickens and save money but not compromise one for the other. Good health comes from a balanced diet. You can say they know what they need but leave them with all they can eat (insert your chickens favorite food here) and stuff that is good for them and provides a balanced diet and see what they will eat every day. I know mine would eat meal worms all day every day but it would not be good for them.
Just my opinion but to much fodder does not leave room for the rest of a balanced diet.

tennesseeckn- I am so sorry but the only one I have with wattles is the one confirmed cockerel. The others have some nubs if that helps. I took their weekly update pics but they did not turn out very well. I ran out before dark while I was cooking to snap a few.

Here's the babies I hope they grow up to be as beautiful as yours!

OK. Thanks for the pictures. Mine's wattles are definitely smaller than the for-sure cockerel and about the same size as the runts. I guess we'll both just have to wait and see.

They both have skinny, little legs so that gives me hope.

Ooooh! You are so SMART! I'll bet you could. I'll call the pathologist at UT tomorrow to find out. I can't wait to hear her response. She already hates me. Apparently, she's used to only talking directly to vets, so the fact that I called her four or five times a day for two days made her a little... um... testy. Me calling her with random questions? I'm sure that will be the icing on her Monday.

LOL... she is gonna hate you, but who cares? If you can get your Orps tested and away from the SLW... I know I would trust buying them from you (if I was in the market for Orps, that is)

ETA or at least test birds you want to sell right before they are sold.

I didn't get around to it today. SO BUSY! Tomorrow is another running around day with appointments.... today I did laundry at my mother's because my washer died. You think I would care, but I really don't. I'm not even interested in getting another right now. huh... weird. I would have flipped out over that before and now it doesn't even phase me. I mean, I go to my mother's anyways and really she loves being needed and being told how awesome her high tech machine is anyways.

I know exactly where Englewood is...I was raised in Athens. I just discovered today there is a regular poster on here who lives within 2 or 3 miles of me. And there's nothing wrong with Southeast TN--I've lived in this area all my life and love it!
