Possum. We have to kill them at our barn all the time- unfortunately after they have got a chicken.Ok, what will kill a chicken and eat out all of the insides and leave the head. I came home tonight and went and checked and I had 1 Pullet this way. Then in the next run over I had one that was dead in the door of the coop and not eaten at all. I set a trap with the dead chicken to try and catch it tonight. This has got to be the most frustrating part of owning chickens. Both of my runs are also covered. I know it wasn't a dog or anything like that.
congrats to you!!!So far I have 1 male and 1 female Cream Legbar! It is so cool knowing what they are as soon as they hatch. I sure would love to hatch out another female!![]()
My lemon Cuckoo are almost laying age too! Does yours have the cuckoo pattern on them? Only one of my girls does and the other 3 don't but carry the gene. Both of my boys do. I love them. I have a live trap set out with the left over dorking pullet in it. I sat it out 2 nights ago but nothing yet. I am thinking about setting out the honey bun instead of the chicken in the trap.So happy to report I received all 26 of my broiler chicks last night at 10:30- all in good health this time. As soon as I took them out of the box they ran to the food and water- that was kind of amazing- never had that happen. Also received my Silver Penciled Rock Rooster from CA this morning at 7:30 (the guys at the PO are starting to remember my name now). Now all I am waiting on is my mature pair of Greenfire original breeding stock Coronation Sussex. Yeah!! so excited!! Lemon Cuckoo hens are almost laying age, Gold Laced Brahmas just started laying. Just in time to start incubating for January.
I will try the cat food. You should post some pictures. I would love to see them.Mine all have the cuckoo pattern. I have a beautiful rooster that has splendid coloring. As far as the trap goes we tried all kinds of stuff and the thing that worked best was a can of cat food (although after a few days if you haven't caught a possom you have to throw the can away because it smells putrid!

He came complete with California Alfalfa and his own pomegranate and melon for snacks on the way-- I was cracking up! Good idea though- if you could afford the pomegranates
