Eastern Washington

Hi... I'm MaggieRose... and I admit I'm powerless over chickens... already looking at next spring and adding to my flock!! Saw some beee-utiful barred rock chickens and my heart melted!!

My ladies have stopped laying, we had to resort to store bought eggs! They were so pale and flavorless. :(

On the upside, we've harvested at least 20lbs of tomatoes, most of which was processed into tomato-basil soup and frozen for the winter.

hello miss ChaeBird! ewww store-bought eggs! but your ladies will have a nice winter rest! your soup sounds lovely! blessings to the little one!

Andham, I am so sorry for your loss, that is just awful!

Chae, I put a simple drop light with a regular bulb on a timer in my coop during the winter. I set the timer to come on at 4 am, then turn off at about 10 am (when the sun is nice and bright). 15 hours of light is the key to keep 'em laying. The girls go to sleep with the natural sunset. My winter lay rate is almost as good as the summer rate. I do usually give them a month or so off in mid-winter.

As for us, I have lost 3 birds this month... My prize Cream Legbar roo and one of my best layers to a bald eagle, and my very best layer to our dog. Very upsetting all around, and making me lean more toward tractors and farther away from the open free ranging they do right now. We are moving to the farm in about 5 weeks, so for now I think they will be confined to their coop. Sigh. They are NOT pleased!

As for our house construction, the rainy weather in the Blues has done us no favor, and we are in full mud management mode right now. Our gravel budget is way over the mark! We should hopefully have some more cement going in this weekend which will help (as long as the truck doesn't get stuck!), but we still have a big concern about the septic system installation. Come on Indian summer, where are you ?!?? Hopefully we will be able to move in next month, but of course that is septic-system dependent. Fingers crossed!

Hope everyone is having a happy fall!
