Eastern Washington

Ugh! It is 97 here in the shade. All the ladies and chicks trooped down to the creek this morning and are staying down there. The silly humans have been putting in fencing for the cows that are coming to visit our field.

I grew up in the Midwest, and it's been 30+ years since I moved to the PNW as a teen. I've especially appreciated the usual lack of humidity in SE Washington. The recent weather has served to remind me how much I don't miss humid weather! It's 101 out my front door right now, and feels hotter than that. I hope it cools off enough this evening to get some outside work done.

And Carries....someone needs to tell the cows it's too hot for visiting!

Hey, has anybody seen Chaebird on here... it's almost July and time for that little one (human!) to arrive!
I've been lurking. :) No news on the baby front. I'm seeing the midwife every week. Everything is going smoothly. My due date is the 13th, but she says I'll probably be late rather than early. The nursery is all ready to go.

It's been sooooo hot! My three big girls are spending all day dust bathing in the shade of our trees. Mr. Bear noticed they've been panting today. Any tips on how to keep them cooler?

I'll bet Chae is miserable in this heat.
I've been staying cool inside, though Friday I nearly passed out after running some errands with my mother. We went strawberry picking at Greenbluff Saturday when it was raining cats and dogs, which I was actually thankful for. No way I'd have been able to pick strawberries in the heat!
I do feel somewhat under house arrest though.

Well Chae, just want you to know we're all thinking about you.

maggierose, my three little girls LOVE oatmeal! They took little bits from my fingers, and made me think they might actually like me. I guess as long as I have oatmeal we're in good shape. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes, we did get Roman's sister :) It's just such a mixed bag of emotions that I've put off mentioning it until I could see how she would work out. We are missing Roman so badly. She does a few things that he used to do and it just makes us choke back tears.
She is much smaller and probably weighs 60lbs. She definitely has more energy than he did but yesterday (her 3rd full day here) she finally passed out. We were down on our lower field digging a duck pond yesterday morning. (We were trying to get it done before the heat wave.) She really hasn't relaxed yet. It wasn't until just after lunch that she fell asleep with her feet in the air (just like Roman). She also slept the whole time the kids played in the river. (This answers your question too, Vicki.) I was relieved. I like a dog that is laid back.
She has also been following the chickens a lot. She will make a dash at one if it's close enough, too. She responds really well to correction, though and seems teachable. She'll leave the baby chicks alone as they walk through her legs and under her nose.
I think now that she'll work out just fine. My youngest son Lucas has declared that he likes her better than Roman. She is sweeter and doesn't mouth as much.

The duck pond, by the way, has helped out the turkey in this heat too. He seems to suffer the most out of our poultry. He waded in the pond a lot yesterday afternoon and didn't pant nearly as much as normal.

PS. Ninetrees, when are you supposed to be all moved in by?
PalChick, I think you have done everything in the book (and more) to keep your chickens comfy!
Chae, good to hear from you :) Hope you continue to manage well.

VickisGirls... yayayayay!! I tried strawberries again the other day just for giggles after our postings just to see what they'd do?... pfft... no dice! They did love the flax seed, sunflower seeds, and some other seeds I had for them. Guess they're just seed kinda girls! Oh and they love my pea patch... I keep explaining the peas are for humans, but they just "Bach" at me and keep on down the row...

Chaebird... bless your heart!! I had my 2nd child in July... I feel your pain! praying for you, and that little one! Not much longer now dear...
