My news doesn't get better...
On the morning of the 4th, I discovered Butterball had been ripped apart. She kept perching on top of the chicken run and it was hard to get her off and into the waterfowl pen so I told my daughter she could leave her there the night before. Being a 15+lb bird I thought she'd be fine. I'm so angry with myself over it. I'm dying to get a camera set up out there so I can see the creatures who wander my field. I know it happened in the morning, as I heard her chattering at some point around 7am, so I'm pretty sure it was a dog. It peesses me off that people let there dogs roam around here so much!
Then my cocker got her yearly cheat-in-the-ears which gave me another VERY unnecessary bill. We have torched the cheat grass in the dog yard, which helped a great deal, but there is a small amount in the backyard and if there is ANY Kahlua will find it!
After I had a breakdown this weekend I've been able to steer myself toward positivity again and am sure things will look up! Thanks for reading my rant!![]()
Chae, How's everything going? Have they let you go home already? Sorry about your hens.
Chae, enjoy the time with your hubby and daughter. I love the nick name Junebug
Chicky, hope things look up for you soon. Sorry about Butterball.
Vicki, so glad you noticed we have a couch outside! Ha, I had forgotten to explain that. When we moved in here it was full of the old man's stuff. We had no room to store his things and deal with them so we hucked a bunch of things onto our field down below our house. Thankfully people can't normally see the crap down there. We've burnt all that we could. Funny thing is, it's really fun to have a couch outside! I've really had to relax since moving here.
We named Roman's sister Bersa. The breeder had named her Bertha. I think because she was the biggest pup in the litter. He sold her to us because she turned out too small for breeding. We have a geographical theme when it comes to our dogs and since half of her comes from Turkey we changed her name to Bersa which is their 4th largest city. Also, it wasn't too different so she still comes when she's called.
She's really behaving herself now. We caught her stalking three times since she caught and mauled Alaska. She seems to have gotten the message. We've been watching her like a hawk with the chickens. We have a small black and white camera we bought off craigslist so we've been able to view the angle that we can't see from the house. It's great to be able to watch her when she doesn't think we are.
So, I have mystery eggs. I'm stumped. I've had this small of eggs before but they had no yolk in them and they were laid by my hens in the nest box. These however, we have found randomly on the ground. The light colored one was found out in our field where the ducks and guineas hang out.
Our oldest ducks are 4 1/2 months old and could start laying soon. I looked up the color of egg they are supposed to lay and none of them lay brown. Also, I read they are supposed to have a sort of waxy coating. The other thought was that they were guinea eggs but everything I've read says guineas don't start laying until the following spring after they are hatched.
I do have some young Easter Egger hens that should begin laying any day now but I'm assuming their eggs will be a blue, green or pale variation...
Here are the two mystery eggs shown with a normal chicken egg for comparison.
