Eastern Washington

Found food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) at Northwest Seed and Pet on division.
They have always had the non food grade
but this is the first time I have found the food grade
and I almost always remember to ask.
The brand is: St. Gabriel Organics

Edit to add+ in Spokane

Unless you can't find it anywhere else...I suggest not giving Northwest Seed & Pet any of your money. They are rude and as unhelpful as possible every time I've been in there, even when we were considering purchasing a little mixed breed puupy they had! I actually have to go out of my way to not go to that store in particular too...I live 2 blocks down Cozza!

I am sorry you have had such a bad experience at NWS&P.
I have always found them to be very helpful.
But then again, I have always talked to the people I know have been there awhile.
I have seen several new faces over the last couple years.

Ondra's Seramas :

We had so much rain, it eroded our (4 mile) driveway partially. Now we have to walk 2 miles uphill to get home. Anyone having similar problems?

I feel your pain!! The mud has finally come out in the driveway. I was up to the axles yesterday trying to get in one more time with a big load of groceries from costco. Now I will be walking for the next month and a half or so. Luckily the driveway is only about two football fields long.

Hoping the snow will melt, still have to use snowshoes to walk down the sides of the driveway.

Well, like I said, I live just down the street so I do tend to stop in when I'm really bored or looking for something in particular I can't find elsewhere (micro sprinkler heads!). The last time we were there was because they were adverising Corgi puppies. My SO's parents refuse to get any other breed and were looking for a male puppy WITH his tail. I asked all three employees I could find for help with another thing we were looking for (can't remember now what it was, found it elsewhere) and as soon as I could get out "Can you help me find..." each one did an about face and walked away from me. I know what working in a store like that is like, but to acknowedge the person in front of you, even with a glance, and then to walk away from a potential customer like that is a great way to lose more than a single sale! They were "out" of the Corgis, but we found a cute little mixed breed girl that I was considering...we left without the pup when my SO got screamed at for putting a foot on the other side of a counter to get a better look at a cute kitten in what was apparently an "employees only" area (unmarked and standing wide open doorway to what looked like more pets for sale...complete with price tags). In trying to get my question answered, I even approached the gal at the register, she pretended I wasn't there until she was "sudden;y" busy at the other side of the store...

That was just the last time I was in there...I really did give it multiple tries before I ever spoke up against them, we've been here for 4 years...maybe they were better before that? From my experience, if you don't have a purchase in your hot little hands...you don't exsist to anyone there.

It's unfortunate that your friend did that. I have to commend you for your friendly and neighborly manner, even when your friends/neighbors chose otherwise. Bring the chicken and egg to your kid's class - that hen can be the spark that leads to future chicken owners (maybe bring some 4H pamphlets - poultry projects!). Walking away is the easy choice... that's how you know it's the wrong one.

Have you seen this group on Facebook? "Spokane Area Chicken Ordinances"... it's the anti-No To Chickens group.

Even for those who are not in a no-chicken area, might I suggest you "like" the page anyway... some of your friends may be in a no-chicken zone... or their friends... or their friends. That was certainly the case for me with the Deer Park Chicken issue. I happened to see mention of the group (not on facebook) and had DH "like" it - 5 of our friends liked it within a day and it went from there. I am not in Deer Park and I am zoned "rural", yet I was able to help a worthy cause with just a click. Pretty cool, huh?

I had something already planned for the same evening the Deer Park Planning Commission met, so was unable to attend. Here are the minutes of that meeting, however.

It would seem that nobody spoke in opposition, though some of those "in favor" certainly did not do their cause any favors (in my opinion). My take-away from reading the minutes is that, for future Public Hearings, there has to be people on hand to counter those who would propose implementing bureaucracy. If you want chickens - get chickens. If you want to house them in a tractor - go for it. How you feed them, what you feed them, whether you clip their wings, etc, etc are individual choices. Chicken LICENSES?!?

What the cluck is wrong with these people?

@frogdog Believe me, I jumped on the "Spokane Area Chicken Ordinances" facebook page months ago! I showed up at Spokane Valley City council meetings to advocate backyard chicken legalization even though I don't live within city limits. When chickens finally got the green light in the Valley, I thought I had it made and that the pro-chicken momentum would push through the county level as well. That's when the problems with my neighbor surfaced. Based on some of her recent facebook posts, I think she has called the county on me. I don't know how swiftly the county operates when they get a complaint that someone has illegal chickens, so I'm making this announcement here (somewhat prematurely) before I resort to Craigslist:

FREE TO LOVING CHICKEN HOME, THREE 8 MONTH OLD, BEAUTIFUL, HEALTHY, EXCELLENT PASTEL BLUE & GREEN EGG LAYING EE PULLETS. GREENACRES, WA

Below is Touhou, our golden colored EE

This diaper wearing chicken is Chickie, our most affectionate chicken

I'll post a picture of Fluffy soon. She has the same coloring as Chickie, but is not as affectionate. She lays the blueish egg.

I'm not ready to part with them yet, but am trying to make sure they'll have a place to go should I get a citation from the county. If I can't find anyone on this forum who wants them, I'll try to sell them on Craigslist. Not sure if I should post this on the Washington board since most those folks are westsiders. Honestly, if I had a place that would process them, I would eat them (and just not tell the kids). I would feel better "eating" my 8 months of investment, than just letting them go for a few bucks to strangers off Craigslist. I've never tasted farm fresh, free range, grass fed chicken before.

I swear, someday soon I'm going to have acreage, and can't wait to welcome a whole box full of cute fuzzy butts!

mrsbos,

Stand strong! Your chickens are lovely.

I always shake my head in wonder at all the fuss over a chicken or two when dogs bark night and day, cats poop on the neighbors lawn, etc.......

Boggles the mind really.

Mrsbos,
Sorry to hear about your situation and neighbor troubles. Hope the county has better things to do...

Those are some pretty hens you have there. I'm sure you can find good homes for them if you have to... hope you don't have to.
Too bad I have a full hen house. They are almost 6 weeks old now.

If all else fails and you do want to process them, PM me... I may be able to help.

Hope everything works out for you!

YES...post this on the Washingtonian site.....there are quite a few of us from this side of the mtns....they may also have ideas for you. Your house chicken - wouldn't she be exempt as she is a "house pet"? Wish I were closer, you could house them here and come visit them. I am so sorry for all the hassel. How in the heck is this bringing down your neighbor's property value? I am sure that is what she is thinking - some people just like to cause problems. NOT nice. Your DD is going to be heartbroken.

but I would post it on the washington thread. Tell them 4321 sent you.
