I'm so excited!!!!!!!! Finally got a place for our Poultry Swap in June. We will be doing it on Maine St. in Spirit Lake. YAY!!!!!!! We'll be including a farmers market of sorts, so if you want to do any crafts or bring fruits or vegies, just let me know. Here are the details.
What: Meet/Greet/Swap/Sell/Potluck- this may change to a local food vendor who has a great sandwich/catering business in S.L.
When: Saturday, June 25, 10:00 a.m. - ?
Where: Maine St. Spirit Lake, ID
What can you bring to swap or sell? Chickens, hatching eggs, other poultry, supplies, crafts
For those bringing poultry, please make sure to bring a tarp for caged birds, or bring a folding table (no contact with the ground). We want to keep the ground clean and keep the birds from picking up anything off the ground to carry home. All birds should be checked several weeks ahead of time for evidence of mites/lice, and treated appropriately. (Our intention is not to offend we just want this to be as clean as possible for all involved.) If you plan to swap/buy, bring extra boxes or crates. (well try to bring a few extra boxes.). Also, we recommend that you bring a bottle of hand sanitizer for use between handling birds again, just a safety precaution. Also if you have a tent cover, it would be advantageous if it gets hot.
If you would like to ell some crafts, that's fine, just need to know what so that I can list on the emails and keep all updated.
Please list what you will be bringing to sell or swap so that I can update the list.
I will supply name tags; please check with me upon arrival.
Potluck: Ill bring a large folding table for potluck items. I'll make sure to supply the grill so we can have hot food as well and Ill bring hot dogs and buns. I'll create categories so we don't have too much of one food group.
If you don't have anything to actually swap or sell, thats okay, it would still be fun to have people come and participate.
One thing I do ask, is that you leave all four legged critters at home. Especially with especially because we'll have live animals for sale, it will be easier to keep the drama down.
I am going to organize a raffle, please bring an item under $20 if you would like to participate.

im sorry, was there some issue with the post of doing the farmers market? I am a little misunderstanding the whys of your post. Are you thinking that I am going to sell the chickens I have? Because that is not going to happen. Maybe you can explain your intent?

Hi Neighbors.
Been an interesting May so far. I'm digging the warmer weather! But man... I'm tired of mowing the grass every 3 days!
My broiler flock of 9 is now down to 3. I've been processing them 3 at a time. I can't believe how big they are! The boys are over 7# live weight... the girls are closer to 6.5# live weight. They are all healthy looking on the inside... which is good to see. Only a few more to go off to freezer camp. I think I'm going to take a broiler break after this batch and reassess my desire to continue raising them. The whole twice daily moving the tractor and the poo and the processing... all doable... but a lot of that depends on my rabbits.
To which... I have two healthy litters now! The oldest litter of 8... is now 12 days old... eyes open... and I had my first kit jump out of the nestbox this morning. So cute! (**must not get attached!***) The second litter of 9... is only 3 days old. All seem to be doing well. My does are seasoned mommas so that is a relief.
So I'm up to my ears in bunnies! It'll be another 7 weeks before I have to think about processing one. That will be bitter sweet. Bitter in having to kill such a nice animal (I had no trouble with the broilers)... sweet in that I hope they taste great and I can replace broilers with more fryers. They are SO much more enjoyable (for me) to raise. We shall see.

Butchuring rabbits is so easy compared to chickens. Just peels off like a glove. And - if cooked correctly - very good. All white meat, low in cholesterol. Good for you. Can you tell I have done it? It has been a couple, few, um, well let's just say a long time - but I used to do quite a few at a time.

It has been a couple, few, um, well let's just say a long time - but I used to do quite a few at a time.
