eating your pet open discussion

In my opinion, eating your pet chicken is WRONG, repeat WRONG!! There just so cute!

I repeat - my chickens love eating leftover chicken, even if it was once a favorite flock-mate.  And they love hard boiled eggs, even though they laid them.  So if they have no problems with it, why should I?

Now, unsubscribing.....

Hello Blooie, :)

I'm not sure if you will see this message since you are unsubscribing, but I hope you do. I need to make it clear to everyone is this thread and in general that this is my 12 yo daughter's profile. So she speaks from a 12 yo tenderhearted perspective. While we all eat chicken here, it is not likely that any of her birds will see the inside of a skillet. Matter of fact, we still go through the funeral ritual around here. :/ Well, she still does it. And we have witnessed our chickens eating chicken and eggs here. There's no disbuting their cannabalistic nature.

So, I thank you all for sharing your love of chickens and your wisdom with her. Just know she is young (and that I do monitor her online activity closely). Maybe you can all help her realize that having a funeral for every chicken that goes on up to that big coop in the sky is a bit unrealistic. Anyhoo, that's all from chick fire's momma.

:)

Yes, I agree with eating chickens and even pet ones. And my chickens agree with eating chickens as they lick the blood from the tree under the killing cone and await eagerly for any organ meats and fat I can toss to them while I butcher their flock mates in front of them. They are blessed with not having an awareness of mortality or being able to worry about the past, present or future. They live in the now and as such enjoy eating chicken as much as the rest of us.

Here's a pic of my rooster trying to steal a piece of meat...he almost got a leg out of the pan before I caught him. He's not mourning, he's saying grace before his meal.....

That was likely one of his favorite hens at one time or another.

This whole thread is not to invite discussion but to invite controversy and have drama where none need exist. Each person has a right to their own belief on the matter and no one has a right to dictate if someone should or should not eat their own chicken, even by posting "discussion" on the matter and using the title "eating your pet"...it's clearly meant to provoke other people and not at all about weighing the pros and cons of the topic.

And, no, it's not a fact that chickens feel emotions and empathy....you could only find that out and confirm it if you were a chicken and they ain't talkin'.

Until they can speak our language and describe in detail their emotions and empathy, we'll just have to get by on the evidence we see and I've not seen much emotion or empathy from any chickens in the past 40 yrs of keeping them. They are beautiful creatures that have been designed by God to be exactly as they are and you belittle them and His unique design by trying to equate them to another of God's unique designs...humans. Vastly and uniquely different and rightly so.

That is precisely what I told my daughter (that this topic was nothing but needless drama) (chick fire's mom here again) but she wanted to engage. Thank you for your response. I think she needed to hear it eventhough she quite didn't want to.

If you find yourself in a life-threatening situation that you should choose between saving your friend or your hen. who would you prefer to save first?

is this suggesting that the hen is or isn't my friend
