Jazzchick it looks like your chick came from a pullet egg. It was too big, the chick that is. I've had that happen. It should be fine. Marans chicks have a tendency to ne big. I don't see the toes that are swollen, as for the hump thing happened to me. I was going to cull it, but a hawk did it for me.
I've had 2 with the hunched necks. Neither made it much past 24 hrs. You can try pol-vi-sol without iron or a poultry specific vitamin, mineral, electrolyte mix. Not sure if it would help or not, but always a possibility.
Seems silly maybe to have done this for a chickie... but gosh I just love my animals...... last night I noticed the soft lump on the back of his long neck had decreased a bit since the night before.... so I held him for a bit and massaged it.... (which he or she ?????? loved)... this morning it looks to have gone down a bit more..... I could hardly tell him apart from the biggest fattest other bcm... so I think he may be okay.... the tootsie thing is odd.... I will see if I have another pic
It is difficult to see in this picture but the tootsie on the right of the photo is markedly bigger longer and fatter than the other tootsie and it effects his walking.. he stumbles and the other chicks are biting his tootsie like they know it is messed up... (heck maybe it is sprained or something...
I have an expensive electrolyte mix I purchased for incoming chicks shipped to me... I will give that to them right now.. Thank you
I think it looks fine, but I'm not right in front to see how it is acting either. I would not breed it, if something is genetic. That is why I was going to cull. I want to breed. I have a nice little flock right now.
hmmmm I will have to check him out in the next couple hours to see if the swelling in his foot went down.... that chick was really packed into that shell and twisted up like a pretzel I had to help him as he layed in a cracked open shell still in a tight little knot and exhausted from a long time pecking and chirping and not getting anywhere. he cracked his shell but it was cracked for over 24 hrs and he went from chirping loudly to faintly chirping when he heard another chick hatching out..
I am calling him a he because he is a big chick... but have no idea.
My chicks have no white on their head.... not even the blue copper maran or the silver copper marans (aka blue cuckoo marans that I can see anyway they are soooo light)
Because they are from two breeders I hesitate to guess the darkest color would be a particular sex. a couple have thicker combs, some have longer wing feathers and some no wing feathers... one of the big fat blacks has a red hue on the back of his head and back... only seen in pix.
Need some idea's on how to sex them... I have one 2 month old I got for my birthday was purchased sexed. The breeder said the females were smaller and when they hatched you could tell from the comb as the males combs were bigger... Does that mean the ones with the thicker combs are males?
Advice other than hanging them upside down or twirling a string over their heads is needed.. please please please...... not that in some instances such things work. My portuguese grandfather used a willow twig to find wells for people..... a willow water switch..... and it works.... oddly enough.. he was paid to do this.
