Ebay Purchased Hatching Eggs Experiences Ups & Downs!!!

Yep agreed. I would never buy from Ebay ever. But I have bought from eggbid and I think I got luck considering there must be alot of dishonest sellers. But for the price of eggs, shipping, and the time it takes to carefully package each eggs. Yeah, sometimes its worth paying alittle more, so it helps to insure a good hatch on the consumer side. As far as buying eggs, I really think you should have a dialog with the seller to get some kind of assurance or trust, before buying from a stranger, basically. Just my thought.

Absolutely. My own suspicions about 6 egg sellers aside, I have had some superb dealings with sellers on ebay. Some of the best stock I ever had came from there.
Most good sellers have a long record of sales on ebay. Their practices and methods, even their listings, smack of professionalism. Those are the ones to deal with.

Six eggs is not enough to get a decent start of any breed from. A 50% hatch, which I consider good from shipped eggs, will at best yield a trio, but more probably a pair. I sell eggs on Ebay and Eggbid, but never less than a dozen quanity. When I was young a setting of eggs was considered to be 15. The one thing I do that might be unusual is the amount of extras I send. The way I pack, 20 eggs fit perferctly in a flat rate box, so if you buy a dozen from me you get 20, whether you want them or not. If you don't want to hatch the extras, eat them, they are plenty fresh. I have pretty decent birds, and always try to describe them properly. My biggest complaint is the sellers who have "mutts" and palm their eggs off as "purebred". It's detrimental to all selers who do breed to the Standard. I also buy on Ebay and Eggbid, and it is strictly a "pay your money and take your chances" crapshoot. I sometime have a complete pot pouri of birds running around with no idea what breed they might be. Some sellers who sell on these auctions really have no idea what a bred to the Standard bird looks like, and are describing them as honestly as they know how. If I were going to ask a single question of an Ebay or Eggbid seller, it would be, "Do you have a current copy of the American Standard of Perfection"?

I ALWAYS email the seller and ask for photos of the parent stock. If I don't get a reply or get the "I'll try to get them to you"..I don't bid.

I have some gorgeous cochins just hatched from an Ebay purchase that was shipped from out west. I had an 84% hatch rate from them and at 4 days you couldn't want more perfect chicks.

That said, I agree that the most important key is communication. If you even THINK everything isn't up to snuff...don't bid! There are some excellent egg sellers on Ebay...many are members of this forum.

Ohhhh yeah. I won't bid on auctions without pictures. And even then, truly, I don't hold my breath that they are all of the stock that my eggs would be coming from.

I stick to buying from here mostly or people that I know and have had good history with.

No, you can never be assured that the eggs are from that flock. I have purchased eggs from BYC'ers and from Eggbid as well and to date most have been good. I had a 0 hatch from some on Eggbid and a 0 hatch on some from a BYC'er. I believe it was my inexperience at hatching at the time, coupled with the usual shipping issues.

I am one that received a Mutt. And it is strange out her picture on ebay has disappeared and she shows no picture. She sold me Black Copper Marans. It is not what I received. And her picture is not posted.

In the past she did sell mixed eggs. With a promise that you would received at least 1 BCM chick. Out of the 6 colorful eggs.
But I ordered just the BCM from one of her other auctions and got the mutt.
Needless to say. I ended up with nothing. The mutt had to be put down for being to weak.
So at least I do know there are mutts being sold as pure breeds.
But this is the way you learn.

Yes, I agree that you need to ship more than 6. My point is that you're getting more than you are bidding for with some of these small auctions. I ship 10 eggs with an auction of 6. I ship a dozen with an auction of 8. I've had no complaints about the quality of the stock or the rate of hatch so far. But I understand that many would rather set a larger batch of eggs. I assume that if that's what they want, then they'll buy from me and also from another seller and combine the hatch.
