Ebay Purchased Hatching Eggs Experiences Ups & Downs!!!

On the other hand, there are plenty of BYC'ers that sell 6 at a time as well. This certainly isn't limited to Ebay. However, if someone is wanted eggs from, say, 4 different breeds but doesn't want 48 eggs, it's a good thing.

I like to get a dozen. If I don't want that many chicks, I sell my extra chicks on Craigslist. I put 15 rare breed chicks on Craigslist yesterday and a person bought them all today. They were extras that I didn't want to add to our flock and this guy was delighted to be able to get a few rarer breeds without having to buy a dozen eggs and hatch them! We all won...

There's another reason sellers may auction 6 eggs. And this one doesn't apply in all cases, but it's one of the reasons I would do it, and I know of at least one other person who does it because of this: Ebay culture dictates that you ship extras if you want to cover a bit of breakage and have a happy customer. If you promise them six, you can ship them 8 to 10 easily. If you promise them a dozen, you've got to ship them 14 or 15 eggs, and that means bigger box, more chance of breakage, etc. Call it "egg inflation" if you will

i only have two silkie hens that are of laying age right now, therefore i can only offer 6 eggs and have them still be fresh after shipping. my girls are laying an egg a day now, so i can get six eggs, ship them priority and still have viable eggs when they get there. dont be so quick to judge people who only sell 6 eggs. i have reasonable prices and i sell 6 eggs on BYC as well. in the swap, i've traded 4 eggs before. some of us aren't in this for the money, just want people to get quality products.

Well said.

When it comes to byc and the egg swaps..id agree with this. But selling on ebay? I know i wouldnt sell on ebay for any reason but the money..too much hassle..too much heartbreak...too little fun! And any more too little money too lol!

I do this because it allows me to send them 6+ whatever extras I can get. I want my eggs to be fresh when they ship and I want the buyers to be thrilled with the amount of extras that I send. Plus, normally the minute I sell eggs, the girls decide to slow down. Happens almost every time! hehe SO I don't want to over sell and then not have enough! I'm generally getting 3-4 eggs a day just from my cochin pen, but the minute I sell some, you KNOW they'll let up. It's just the way it goes! hehe

I rarely sell eggs, but that's normally what I do when I do sell them.

Honestly, the only reason I sell eggs is b/c I won't be able to hatch them myself. hehe I just sold some for that reason. Otherwise they all go in my `bator. Whoops! ;-)

Side not, I got 6+ in a swap here. Seven arrived. All grew, if I remember correctly and are due in two days. So 6+ eggs does not neccesarily mean you don't get anything out of it! (I know these were great odds, especially since they took a few extra days to arrive.)

Well, y'know, I understand that, and to each his own. I have a pretty good day job

so the profit from egg sales on ebay really isn't any sort of lure for me

I do it to keep the breed going; I do it because I don't see the quality out there that I'd like to see; I do it because I hate to see these eggs scrambled up for the dogs, etc. But, yeah, I don't do it much. Just once in a while...

I don't sell eggs, but I like when I have the option to buy less eggs. I like to diversify my stock and I had room for a small number of eggs, after ordering a couple larger amounts. I wanted to fill the small space with some "new blood". I really don't see how anyone thinks that anybody can make money on the shipping. After you factor in the time to pack, cost of shipping, cost of materials. There are some people that eat the cost of the supplies (I know I have bought from one in paticular) and charge actual shipping cost. I feel that she deserves something for her costs so I include a couple dollars extra when I send money and if I had more I would send it because I feel she deserves it. If someone packs nicely, bubble wraps individual eggs, that takes time. If you break it down: actual shipping $7-$9, cost of bubble wrap, tape, etc. $1-$2, time spent wrapping, labeling, etc. 20-30 minutes, also the time spent collecting the eggs. Then you account for the gas or time(if they walk) to go to the PO. I think paying approx $13-$15 for shipping is a deal and I don't see where the money is made. What people forget is that someones time is valuable and they deserve to be reimbursed. We are lucky to have some people here that I think really give too much of themselves for the rest of us to share in their breed. Just my opinion.
Gratefully,
Krista
edited to say sorry I got sidetracked since this doesn't have anything to do with ebay per se
