Ah, so then a natural approach seems best yes? Idk if im gona be able to score any of that fancy wood around these parts at a reasonable price, but thats a negative thing to say on my part now isnt it. Lol. I'll make some calls thx.

Hi Guys,

I am the Chief Technical Officer from Eco Building Products and would like to offer some insight to your conversation. As the post mentions there has to be some sort of chemicals applied to provide the efficacy against mold and fire and yes this is true. I will however offer some further insight on the details. We employ biocides that are very people/chicken and environment friendly. The same items we employ are very similar to what is used in women cosmetics and in wet napkins you will wipe your face with. As for our fire inhibitor this is one of the very unique attributes that sets our treatment apart. We employ an aqueous fire inhibitor that is made up of a Quaternary salt compound. Basically all of the ingredients are high nitrogen based and are used as fertilizers on food we eat. We have a proprietary binder that makes our compound stable and non corrosive.

As for our treatment we are a topical treatment providing a shield to the lumber. We change the permeability of the surface locking in a high solids content providing preservation and protection against wood rot, termites, fire and mold. Our process is quality control driven with third party inspections. The incremental cost for our treated lumber makes this the only choice for what you are doing. The Eco Red Shield is a prime coat so be sure to paint the lumber for exterior exposure.

I will be happy to assist with any further questions you may have. Thanks for the interest in Eco Red Shield protected lumber.

Yeah...the resistance to fire and mold is good, but it had to get that way some how...just means more chemicals in my book :)

Agrees.^^^

Don't let slick marketing trump plain good judgment....wonder how long this stuff has been around?

Didn't take their market rep long to find this post and plug the product.

Looks like they have a huge market in disaster rebuilding...and anything with 'eco' in it these days.....pfft...

Hey Guys! Have used the product for quite some time now and it is incredible. The people there at Eco were very helpful and also back up their product with a 10 year wrranty. No one else does! I'm very comfortable with my decision as they have a greenguard approval to be able to use their product to build schools (schools with children!) I don't think any government authority would let that happened if the product wasn't true blue. Anyway, my opinion, for what its worth. Since the price is relatively the same why not go for a fire proof, rot proof and mold proof lumber thats safe enough to build schools with?

Another first time poster...just here to plug ecowood?

They do this lumber in clear on special order. Everyone needs to think about this as sun screen on your skin. Do nothing and see what happens. Termites and insect carry diseases and biocides are in cheese. The best way to build a chicken coop that will last is to use Eco than install a water born poly coat or two and now you have something that will last and clean easy:):):)

Thank you for visiting and giving us a better explanation of the process. Because it is a topical shield, does this mean that cutting the boards will leave the cut end susceptible to mold, rot, insects and fire? How would you suggest the cut surfaces be treated?

Wow I've been a contractor for 30 years and I have never seen fire proof wood! I bet it is about as fire proof as the steel used to build the World Trade Center. Yes siree we all know we can trust the same government authority that brought us NSA spying on civilians. Let me see since it is school approved biocide I should be able to burn the scraps in my fireplace? Can it stop carpenter bees?

If I use it to build my chicken coop and in 9.5 years from now the carpenter bees and termites have destroyed it are you going to pay to build a new coop? Just askin'
