Chapter 2: Asem opened his eyes. There was a deep chill in the air. It was mid-spring... so why was there so much snow around him? And why were there pine trees? Why was there a frozen stream? In fact, why was he outside at all? Asem had gone to sleep, feeling excited. Even though everything there looked like a scene you might find if you went on vacation in winter, something looked different. That was it, that was the word. Different. Off. But Asem couldn't for the life of him tell you what it was.
Not every part of the stream could be frozen, because Asem heard running water. He followed the sound to where a girl sat, seemingly not noticing him. She was crouched on the stream's bank, looking into the depths of the clear water. Her hair was a golden blonde, and her skin was only very slightly tanned. She was wearing a cold-shoulder white top with a long blue skirt that went to her ankles and white, one-inch heels. Heels in this weather?
Asem took a step forward. The strange girl must have heard it, even though the step was soundless in the soft snow. It was soft, but somehow it supported his weight. Her head whipped up from what she was doing, whatever it was, and for the first time Asem noticed a basket next to her. She blinked up at him, her pretty green eyes the color of a lush rainforest.
"Who are you?" she demanded. "What are you doing here?" She stood up.
