EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

She also won't fish if the cows are laying down.  Something my Uncle also taught her.  If the cows are laying down, it's a bad day to fish.  :hu

Those old timers had all sorts of sayings that usually ring true.
Bullheads won't bite till the peepers freeze three nights, seems to be true in the spring. Also, if it starts raining before seven it quits by eleven, mostly true in the summer anyway.

I know some people that work for the Postal service.

At 73, my sister just retired from there. Her second retirement. First was from Anheuser Busch.

I've been through losing chicks in the mail, all the way up to the head of Express Mail. I learned a lot about the process. There's a dock at the distribution center about 12 miles from here. It is always loaded with birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, mammals, you name it. I'd call and they'd look all around and couldn't find my birds when they hadn't been scanned anywhere.
They all made it and all alive. They were 5 days old by then. They are the foundation of my current birds.

Emma, EE hen... She's 8 1/2, I think... She's still got spirit but I'm doubting she'll make it past this winter.
Of course, I said that last year...
My EE, oldest bird on the property was taken with her flock mates by mink this spring. She was slow but at 7, she was still a reliable layer. She's the grandmother of all the olive eggers in the incubator right now.

Yup, Pulaski. 2- 2 1/2 hr drive from here but well worth it. Crazy place when the Salmon are running. If your willing to walk a couple few miles there is a lot less crowding. First time I went 24yrs ago the old guys that took me headed out two hrs before daylight. I thought they were crazy, said we had to get a good spot. There was already people sleeping on the banks all up that river waiting for official daylight fishing time... I was pretty amazed that first trip, people dragging big fish with a rope right down the side of the roads like cave men Lol!
Usually beautiful nice fall weather. Did go up once when it started snowing and didn't know my waders went to crap, fished all weekend anyway, legs looked like they were sunburnt and even peeled but I brought back six over 30lbs each. We'd go up Friday night and sleep in the back of their truck and not come home till Sunday night unless we caught our limit early Sunday.
One of my best friends lives there now, a couch in a house is way better than the back of a truck with a cap
lol.png

Steelhead run all winter, haven't tried for them yet.
That sounds fabulous.
The trout parks around here with rainbows and brown trout are wild when the whistle blows in the morning. Weekdays are much nicer.
Holidays and opening weekend are the worst. The best holes have waders 2 rows deep and another row without waders on the bank.
There are rivers with trout outside the parks that are much more serene.

The line of lakes along the MO/AR border in the Ozark Mountains have some impressive fishing along with the spring fed rivers feeding the lakes. Beginning with Beaver Lake, Table Rock Lake, Taneycomo (oldest and now a trout lake), Bull Shoals and Norfork
Out of Bull Shoals come state records of Smallmouth, Spotted, White bass. 22 lb. hybrid bass and 53 lb. Striper.
4 world record Black Crappie line class fish came out of Bull Shoals as well as line class world records of Striped Bass, Walleye and Blue Cat.
The 19 lb. 3 oz. Walleye came on 4# test, 50# Striper came on 6# test and the 68# Blue Cat on 8# test.
The White River, feeding these lakes has the state record Cutthroat at 9 lb. 9 oz., the state record Rainbow (19 lbs.) and 6 World Record Browns including the all tackle record.
Big Striped Bass run out into rivers feeding Norfork and Lake of the Ozarks in early spring - February and March.
The world record 'catch and release' cutthroat at 20" came out of the North Fork along with the state record Ozark Bass.
The world record brown trout was taken out of the North Fork river feeding Norfork. At 34.8 lbs., it only held the record for a short time when a 38.9 pounder was taken from the same river. Shortly later a 40.4 was taken on the Little Red in AR. Still the state record, it is second in the world.

A buddy of mine on my pool team had a wife (now divorced) that he taught to fish. She became quite good and was soon a professional with all kinds of sponsors. One was a boat mfg. in AR. She got a new boat and motor every year. Once while towing her new boat home, she decided to open it up on Lake Norfork. While cruising the lake she decided to throw a line and caught a 43 lb. Striper and her picture ended up on the cover of some fishing mag. All this while her husband was working in the factory at Ford. I think this all wore thin on him after a while.

95 bottles of milk on the wall
I remember when the local dairy would deliver milk to the house. There's be a half gallon bottle on the back porch every morning.

It's actually nice out guys, so I'm going to get dressed and dig potatoes, rake out the run, and then I'll be back.
have fun!! how are you going to get your post count digging taters?

A couple news items.
When I left for pool league yesterday, there was one chick out and 7 pips of the 12 eggs. I just checked and there are 7 chicks, one zipping and another pipped. The only egg without action thus far is one I put a question mark on a week ago because it wasn't as advanced as the others. However 2 days ago it had filled the egg so it may just be behind the others. It was one of the oldest eggs of the lot. They were due 15 hours ago so even this one isn't much over 1/2 day late. They're all from the same hen so I would have expected them to be nearly a day between the oldest and newest but most came right on time.

Pool league was a pleasant change of fortune. This was week 5 and we had yet to win a match but we won last night. Each week only one of our players played well and that isn't a recipe for success. It was a different player each week.
I won all 4 of my games and the last 2 were against the best player in the league. So we only needed 5 wins between my other 3 teammates. (race to 9 wins).
My son wasn't there because he had opening night Blues hockey tickets.

Everyone have a good day. As usual, I have lots to do and I keep getting farther behind.
congrats on the chicks and pool!!

I've got to get 450 by the time i get of the computer! guess what I get to do today? since i am homeschooled, we get to go to a co-op that is ONLY field trips! and today we are going to pick apples, go on a hayride and eat....DONUTS
have a great time!!

Mostly good. She is adorable!

Okay! She is singing the alphabet in the tub. Today is the dog's eighth birthday. You two need to make him a treat, and plan a party.
Happy birthday Sturgis!!!

This is my first time hatching and my first time with a broody hen! My silkie hatched out two chicks from a clutch of 6 eggs. It was a staggered hatch since I forgot to mark her first 4 eggs and she collected two more (after that I marked them!). She is now on day 28/22 with one egg remaining. Two eggs were removed after candling showed no chicks at all by day 18 and yes they were just eggs when I cracked them. One egg was removed today due to a terrible smell and after checking, yes just a rotten egg with maybe a tiny bit of early development. The final egg is completely dark, I can see nothing at all. This is the second day I can see nothing including no air cell. I've left her the egg since she's still willing to sit, her two chicks are doing fine with her and I do not know if this egg is from the first 4 or the later 2 eggs. Do you think there is any hope at all for this final egg to become a chick. I am using an egg candler not a flashlight and although being a novice it is very clear I can only see absolute dark in this remaining egg. We didn't candle much at all early on, in fact didn't think anything would come of this clutch until a chick hatched. First chick is now 9 days old, second chick is now 4 days old. I've read and read these forums but still not quite sure at what point we float test or give up and take away this egg. Silkie has been antsy but still sitting.
good luck
fl.gif
most of us dont touch broody eggs, but if they are that far apart i would water test, water near 100*

morning choas, mc, liz, sally, pens, benny(if here), kathy, and like 30 other people that I'll eventually be able to remember... after I have coffee.
lol

it appears the birds i got sent, are officially MIA. Poor ducks and baby chicks. :(

How does the post office LOSE live babies?
they do it a lot, sometimes on purpose

yeah but live birds are cheeping. So they just let them die? :(
sometimes an employee will help them

only one more day till lockdown or would it be conciderd two.????????
when did you set them??

I haven't had coffee yet, don't blame me for blanking on names. I promise you exist ot me.

@Chaos18 Post office just called.

Apparently, my birds are here, AND alive. ;o
YAYYYYY!!!!

This photo is in my memories today, sure do miss our mama goose and little mallard (lost them both this past spring). Still spoiling the other two. They are almost 17 years old.

love this pic too!

Thanks. I think I'll let them go another hour or so. They are running around so much I can't tell if there's one egg or two left.

On my second game, the guy got so mad, I was on the 8 ball and when he missed his shot he grabbed the 8 ball and threw it into the pocket.
bun.gif

The one that is full but unhatched, try a float test. Put it in water and see if it moves around.
Anyone else have suggestions?
I usually just let them stay in an incubator but with a broody, she may just abandon them to take care of the live chicks.
thats funny
i also say float test, the mom will prob give up soon

Emma, EE hen... She's 8 1/2, I think... She's still got spirit but I'm doubting she'll make it past this winter.
Of course, I said that last year...
emma is very pretty for being so old, lets hope she toughs it out

i'm invisible!!
mwuhahahaa
4 baby chicks arrived alive. Put them in with my solo silkie hatchling.

3/4 ducks were alive... put them in with the other 2 ducks.
hugs.gif
sorry about the losses

One of the little chicks is falling on it's back and acting kind of sickly. I wrapped it in a paper towel and have it sitting on my desk in a bowl. It's chirping at me and more active now... but the way it was acting in the brooder, I was worried it was going to die O.o
it was probably cold too

They're just trying to pad their post counts.

Homey don't play that, I naturally talk so much I don't need any help. Once in a while, it even makes sense

Craziness.
And I, much to Sally's chagrin, continue to multi-quote.
Glad to hear that some arrived alive. Make sure to give them electrolytes and probiotics.
X2 and something for energy.

already mixed some stuff in with the water and dipped their beaks trying to get them to drink.
Add some agave nectar or sugar to the water to give them some energy. Make sure the water isn't cold.
If I have a bird close to the same age, I put it with them as a tutor to teach how to eat and drink for a couple days.
It takes a load off of me.

Do you have pictures of the five toed black skin white silkie?
all silkies are supposed to have 5 toes and black skin

Very popular as food for Asian cultures. There's a big chest freezer full of them at Seafood City Supermarket here.

Dad wasn't a fisherman, and I had no relatives close by, so I'm pretty much self-taught, since a pre-teen
Dad was a worm and bobber fisherman who took me to rivers large and small, plus farm ponds.
I taught myself all other types of fishing.

A herd of cows lay down to chew their cud every day.
