EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

The more cold the better, IMO. All that comes in summer is more work, more bugs, and terrible weather.

Now, fall on the other hand... I love.
well if you ever decide to move to Alaska have a hundred and fifty Acres with a Salmon (and Rainbow Trout) Creek running through it I'd love to sell. ;)
Just kidding, it is too expensive for most, but we can't afford the taxes if we split it up to sell it in pieces.

If I remember, the article said to pinch the flat of the ear hard above & below the crease, and SNAP the ear straight. My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the pinching is meant to make the animal concentrate on the pinching rather than any possible discomfort when the ear is snapped, similar to the old cowboys biting an ear of a totally unbroke horse while someone else puts a saddle on.
:thumbsup

I thought it may have been something like that. I didn't know if you were a minnow fisherman or lures.
Have you ever fly fished for salmon?
I've used wet flies and yarn flies in the rivers... You can't minnow fish these when they are out in the lake...... You might be fishing in 100's of feet of water.... Trolling is the only real way to fish them.
Kings might go over 30 lbs.. Coho are smaller.... The best ones are these smaller "jacks".... At a couple pounds apeice.... We were fishing shallow as they are in chasing smelt.

I don't have time to learn to fly fish but I have to figure out what type of compact pole and lures or something that I need to fish when I go to the Tetons and Yellowstone. Several of the places in the Tetons are known for Cutthroats another type of fish, we will be up near the Continental Divide and headwaters.

Maybe some type of spinner with a clear bobber  ?

Quote: I had a couple of telescoping spinning rods; I still have one of them that I haven't had a need for in years. They weren't of the best quality, but they got the job done, and were easy to travel with. I'd think something like them would strap to the outside of a pack w/o getting in the way. A small reel should fit in the pack somewhere.

I will have to figure out what is a relatively inexpensive one that is strong enough.

You make me want to go fishing now.

There are lots of guides to hire out there that will teach you fly fishing in short order and provide all the equipment. It isn't prohibitively expensive. You can go for 2 hours, a morning, all day, overnight or week trips.

IMHO, that is the best bet. They'll show you all the best spots, get you started and you don't have to bring any gear.
Some buddies and I were on a ski trip in Utah. They tried to talk me into going with them on a morning guided fly fishing jaunt. I chose to go skiing that day at Sundance. My philosophy was that I can fly fish for trout in the Ozarks. I can't get Wasatch skiing in Missouri.

My first King Salmon caught me not the other way around. I was sitting on the old wood bridge edge leaning over watching the water as I fished for trout. When that fish hit the line, it is a good thing my dad grabbed me, because I was doing like I had been taught to always hold onto your pole well ;)
My Dad put his hands over mine and brought that fish in. It was bigger than my five or six year old arms span. I wish I could have appreciated the fishing talant my dad was to bring that King Salmon in on trout line with a little kid. It was years before I could appreciate it.
