EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

That they are. Not sure what to expect at this point. Pitching's much better than it's been since the Palmer/McGregor/Martinez days, but only time will tell if it's sustainable....I sure hope it is.
Cards got off to a real slow start but are 8 and 10 now. Defense has looked like little league at times. Hitting hasn't been what it should be. Today's pitcher, Mike Leake has the NL's lowest ERA. Yesterday's winner, Lance Lynn is at least in his pre surgery form and Friday's winner, Wainwright did it all in their 6-4 win. He pitched well but also had a 2 run home run and a 2 run single.
Several years ago some of the pitchers were hitting home runs, doubles and triples but the rest of the bats were silent. Someone asked the manager what they could do to get better and he said, "the pitchers will have to hit more home runs".

Never get tired of looking at NN fm chicks and adults...

Bear was here about an hour ago, not close enough to get a shot off, maybe tomorrow

Oh and my husband saw 4 ducks so only lost the drake
And I counted all the birds roosting and there were 9 so I lost 4 (2 of which were my only roosters)
Dang - but glad you didn't lose as many as you thought.

Quote: I can hear it in my head: "You first need to get yourself a tractor batt'ry. These are easily available at your local farm after dark. You get your jumper cables and hook one side up to the hood, and another side to the wheel well there, and you're all set. When the bear comes for the feed, he'll get a jolt so bad he'll be dancin' for weeks." Then he'd reach for the car door and shock himself.

good morning everyone!
Hey, stranger! Long time no see - glad to see you!!!

Quote: Friday was about 90F degrees here, and then yesterday it only went up to 72F, and was in the low 60s in the evening. I was at Tractor Supply last night, and the saleswoman who was in the parking lot shivered and said conversationally to me, "Can you believe this chilly weather in April?!"

Good morning Liz.
It has been a long time since I have had some free time to come and visit during the morning hours. I have missed chatting with everyone.
And we've missed you!

GOOD MORNING, AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE.

Good morning, MC! Thanks!!!

Hi!

I have 15 eggs in a cheap Chinese incubator for 1 week, I want to candle them today, but I'm worried beacuse that involves taking the lid off, and from the research I've done, that drops the humity by a lot, I don't want that, is there somthing I can do to reduce that?

Thanks ^^
During incubation, while it is true that you shouldn't open the incubator a lot, it won't be a problem to open it to take the eggs out to candle (take them out and put in an egg carton and close it back up) - the issue during incubation is often more maintaining temperature. It's during lockdown, when the eggs are hatching, that you should not open the incubator AT ALL if you can help it, because it is essential that the humidity be kept high during hatch, and if it drops after eggs have pipped, there is a real risk to the chicks.

I recommend taking some time to read all the relevant info at the beginning of this thread (in the second post). It's a lot, but it will really help you understand.

Love the "walking on air" pic.

The hormones i'm on are giving me hot flashes and migraines. :( Fun stuff. Last dose is today for Oral meds, then I start injectables for 3-4 days tomorrow, if everything looks good on the ultrasound.

Quote: That's an excellent post - yes, the essential issue is that you need to cook it well done. (It's a miserable disease to have, so prevention is key.)

I'm slow to get started today, got some brooders to clean, some chicks to weigh, and more tractor building. I'm getting there, but I'm despairing of ever finishing.

I'm done with coffee, I suppose I need to get going. Have a great day, all!!!

Quote: I remember watching Bob Gibson pitching for them in a World Series game once; pretty impressive.

The weirdest things about the O's so far this season are the 1-2 run games they're winning, and the lack of HRs so far from their "big guns"; Davis is the only one of the veteran home run threats do much yet. Mancini, the rookie, is still an unknown commodity over 162 games.

I never did it again. Just not worth the wear and tear but 78 hours of constant paddling sure builds the guns. Part of me wants to go again because I'm sure I could cut my time way down with what I know now. However, it is by far the hardest thing I ever volunteered for. Strong head winds most of the way, 90sF during the day, blazing sun. Scariest time was passing a barge at night when 4' roller waves came at you. About half the boats drop out, some the first day. One guy was done after an hour. Most people have a ground crew to meet them with food and water at checkpoints. I carried everything with me. That included 28 gallons of water. I was able to give a couple gallons away at the last checkpoint to someone that was out. At some places on the river, like Washington, it was moving so fast they had to move the checkpoint or it would blow you right past the ramp. I was looking forward to getting out at that ramp because I had a big bug in my eye for about 4 miles. It was about 10pm and I wanted to go in somewhere with a mirror and light to get it out. No chance, the current carried me right by so the bug had to stay. The kayaker that won the singles kayak category lost all of his fingernails on the trip. I've done a lot of multi day trips on most of the rivers in Southern MO and a couple in Northern AR.. 140 miles on the Buffalo/White in Arkansas, 70 miles on the upper Meramec, 100 miles on the Current, 70 miles on the Wachita/St. Francois, just under 50 miles on the North Fork, 40 miles on the Jacks Fork, 45 on the Eleven Point, 150 on the Gasconade, lots of shorter trips on most of the streams south of the Missouri river. My next major canoe adventure will be going from the Atlantic to Pacific (or vice versa) over the Talamanca Mountains just northwest of the isthmus of Panama including La Amistad National Park. It's only about 80 miles as the crow flies but is probably 4 or 5 times that in river miles with lots of portages. I haven't picked a specific route yet or the rivers. I'd like to go close to the border for the shortest route, but some of the rivers there are right on the border and I wouldn't want to keep encountering Panamanian border agents. So I'll probably pick a route farther from the border even though it would be longer.. It is also the territory of the indigenous Bribri and Cabécar peoples. I would need to hire guides from both tribes. Otherwise I might not return. I rented a house from the daughter of the Cabécar tribal elder or chief. A guy that used to be a border patrolman said he could introduce me to the Bribri elders. I was thinking a baby monitor in the building would alert you when it attacks so you wouldn't have to stay up all night every night. I guess they don't have trash pickup or landfills. What a great day of fishing. I guess they were hitting huh? What did you use for lures/bait? I'm sorry. I saw that this morning. I can't believe the Predators swept the Blackhawks. Blues will be facing them but have home ice. Though the Blues seem to play better on the road. Are you using your phone? How is Sprint network coverage there? I have Boost mobile on the Sprint network. Unlimited talk, text, data for $43 a month. I couldn't hear the roosters when I went to work because the dogs and Macaws drown them out. That was a noisy place. about 400 Macaws and about 40 dogs. :hugs If it is up there, perhaps surgery from a vet. Probably not worth it. I was watching a vet show where they did similar surgery on a duck and fixed it. X2. Sometimes I'm tempted to assist but not until day 22 and then the success rate is poor. If they don't pop right out, they probably shouldn't. A little low for a good hatch rate. Several women have hatched in their bra if a broody dies but recently someone wanted to incubate start to finish in the bra. This was last month. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1159065/special-experiment I found this a very interesting read. http://www.petersenshunting.com/uncategorized/steven-rinella-the-bear-facts-on-trichinosis/ Os are doing well aren't they. Looks like a carnation comb (king's comb). If that is a Maran's side sprigs are a disqualification in Marans. Only Penedesencas and Empordanesas are supposed to have one. I won a comb contest with mine.
we were trolling Rapalas and Ridge runners.

What do you have humidity at? Taking the lid off won't matter at all. Broody hens get off every day to eat and drink, and still get good hatches.
37.2 Celuis and 70% Humitity

I have seen a broody hatch eggs, So I know what you mean

Candling went well, 13 out of 15 I saw somthing Yippie!

Thanks! ^^
