I was looking for something suitable for their wings...but I'm not piercing their wings.

x2, or any of that toe punching stuff... Shiver. I like bands.

Have about 10 different colours of legbands, and make each colour correspond to a number. Put multiple bands on the birds to make multiple digit numbers. I'm thinking of a band on the left leg to ID clan number, and then 1--3 bands on the right to show individual number.

I missed this the first time around - I like it! I'm totally doing this. (And yes, the numbers wear off to easily - I use numbered zip ties on the chicks, and telling a 3 from an 8 after a couple weeks is a nightmare... Fortunately, for the NNs, they all look different. But I need a better way for the ones that look a lot alike (the TankxGNH girls, the S&G girls, etc.)

I miss the ears like the sheep. That was easy.

1701: for first lamb born in 2017
Color of the ram for the top color.
Color of the ewe for the underside of the tag for the lamb. At a glance I could see the year and lineage without having to check paperwork and cross reference the letter of the year.

And all the paper/internet records with the registration...all the notes with the birth records.

That's a great idea. Wish it worked with chooks.

There's a product on the market called Spike It. It's intended for adding different colors to soft plastic fishing lures. You should check it out; maybe something you could use.

OK, so, fo the last couple nights I've needed to chase Khan and the Botany Bay crew indoors to roost (to be fair, I was nervous that something would get them, so I started a bit before sundown). I have their paddock seriously protected from overhead, so today was the first day they got to be outside while I was away at work. Now I'm trying to be patient and wait to see if they put themselves to bed at a reasonable hour. (Gotta get their auto chicken door installed. )

They're out there figuring out what this dark stuff is. I don't want to go up to them too early because they love to come running to see me (no treat history, they're just sweet like that), and I want them in the coop instead. Khan seems to understand, though, and he's acting kind of like the kid in class that the teacher left in charge, but nobody will listen to him. He keeps making these little attempts to herd them, but right now they're looking like they like the idea of roosting on top of their shade platform instead of in the coop (therefore being a nice little buffet for raccoons and possums, table and all). I'll give them a little while longer. If I have to physically relocate them to the roost at night a couple times, they'll learn (it's just a giant PITA for me).

Off to go watch the window...
