EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Yeah...2 Isbars and 1 Chocolate Orp look a little fuzzy. I have 1 Chocolate Orp & 1 White Polish that have perceptible movement. But they all did the same thing in the water.

I'll keep them going because I can't stand to pull the plug but it's making me crazy!!
Don't float test the ones you can see movement in. Kinda risky.

Good luck... Still a chance. :fl

Lol. He's near seven feet on his hind legs.

I'm not much for small goats, harder to keep in and bending over to catch a tiny goat when you're 6' isn't on my fun list.
Wow that goat is huge! Ya hubby says we would be chasing little goats all over the neighborhood cause they would be hard to keep in. Lol
Calling all opinions. I have been running two incubators side by side---a brinsea mini and a brinsea maxi. The mini was new, and I had two successful hatches in the maxi before. I candled around day 14 and noticed that the development of the embryos in the maxi seemed to be lagging behind the mini. I bought a back up probe thermometer and discovered the maxi was running 95.9 while it said 99.5 on the display. So, I can only guess, but maybe it had been running below temp for 2 weeks. I did adjust the temp upwards to compensate for the discrepancy and get the machine where it is supposed to be temp wise. All of my eggs in the mini hatched, but over the course of discovering the lower temps in the maxi, I also discovered 9 eggs had dead in shell embryos probably ranging from day 11 to day 18. Now, it's day 24 and I have no pips in the 5 remaining eggs. I can see movement in 2 of them, but not in the other 3 by candling. I did do the float test and they all floated just about 5% of the egg above the water line. I have put them back in the machine. What would you do? How long would you wait on them? Any advice would be appreciated.
I'm sure someone will chime in soon.

Lmao! Roosters watching live porn what kind of place you running there anyway! Sounds like more back breaking work for ya. Ugh. You make me tired just thinking about it.

Well, I didn't really mean it that way. I don't particularly want to have to be in detention with Ralphie.

Yeah, I get tired just thinking about it as well. All five boys slated for culling are now tucked up for the night in their individual pens (aka big brooders indoors) - those brooders have been AWESOME for the adults either pre-cull or as a hospital pen. Of the remaining three boys, Bubba is acting the same (he's top boy) - comes to greet me at the fence, tail up. But the other two (Ricky Bobby and Mr. Green) hovered on the roost with tails down, and kinda had that "am I next?" look to them - catching the boys was not a particularly traumatic experience, but they had their world rocked. It was certainly quieter - we'll see how they work out their new pecking order. The GNH boys have lived as a trio without too much fuss for over a year now (they tussle a bit sometimes, but nothing injurious). Hoping these boys will be similar.

Saw "Chicken People" today. Great movie---and I don't say that much.

@Fire Ant Farm, LOVED the stupid guineas line. :lau

I know, right?! Laughed so hard when he said that. Loved the variety of folks they decided to follow (and talk about their whole lives, not just the chicken parts). And yes, the birds were gorgeous. I was a little irritated about it being all about bantams (being a LF gal myself), but I got over it. When I'm tired, I remember that guy working 12 hour days on the motors and then coming home and working with his chickens in the dark... And I don't feel so bad.

I'll have to look for that! I spent all day reading. It was great! Took a few breaks from it to rest my eyes and do some chores and still finished my book by 4. Went to the store a little bit ago and realised the minute I walked in there I would have no problem becoming a recluse. PEOPLE AHHH. This one lady spent almost the entire time I was in there debating with her 3 or 4 year old what to get out of the quarter machine. Another chic that looked cracked out blocked and isle causing a traffic jam and never got out the way. Got stuck beside someone who smelled bad in the produce isle. Had to listen to a two faced lady I know making small talk quite loudly with someone she will no doubt talk smack about the minute her back is turned. I seriously think about ordering my groceries on Amazon.

I am SOOOOOO with you on that. And the older I get, the more I get irritated with people in general. (Hence the "Get off my lawn" under my avatar.) And I REALLY would like to have a day just to read. Maybe next week if I get enough chore stuff done this week.

(I really DO need that t-shirt that says "This gal likes chickens, and maybe like 3 people.")

Baby bunny died :( Kiddo was sad. We told her the odds were slim.

Sorry to hear. :(

Well, as I said, all the boys are tucked up with water only, the cooler is scrubbed out and filled with ice (should be just the right level of ice water tomorrow, if not I can add water), fishing table is scrubbed, scalder is scrubbed, tools and cone ready. Only thing left is to cut some of the greenery that has impinged on the processing area tomorrow morning. The nice thing about using the brooders as holding pens is that I don't have to rush to do it all at the crack of dawn (though I want to start early if I can). It's supposed to be a cool, rainy day all day tomorrow, so kinda perfect for processing. I needed to do it sooner or later, and had already made the cull priority list before all the fuss, so might as well be now.

I'm going to start winding down and head to bed soon...

Kristen, I loved the bantams, but I really wish they had Chanteclers in there. Not that I'm biased or anything. :lau
The 12 hr day guy reminded me of you.... Then I felt guilty sitting on my rear watching a video while you were likely out working in 90° weather.

I couldn't get over those leghorn bantams. The hatchery leghorn type is meh, but those were WOW. Would I breed 'em? Nah. I like the brick breeds. Am I drooling over them anyways because they're oozing quality? Of course. :love

Found some funny t-shirts while looking for that one kajira posted. Let's see how well that drag and drop thing works with the new BYC.

Well, honestly, when I'm out there doing stuff, I keep reminding myself that it was MY CHOICE to have a billion chickens this year. I need to cut down, just need to think my way through it. Also have some ideas to make maintenance easier.

And yeah, I may not like bantams to have, but those were some NIIIIIIIICE chickens. LOVED that guy's bantam leghorn boy (can't recall if it was a cockerel or cock bird). But that winner white rock was NICE.

Thought it was a cockbird... I don't know. I was too busy looking at those perfect tail angles and satin white plumage.
