EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Well, I didn't really mean it that way. I don't particularly want to have to be in detention with Ralphie.

Yeah, I get tired just thinking about it as well. All five boys slated for culling are now tucked up for the night in their individual pens (aka big brooders indoors) - those brooders have been AWESOME for the adults either pre-cull or as a hospital pen. Of the remaining three boys, Bubba is acting the same (he's top boy) - comes to greet me at the fence, tail up. But the other two (Ricky Bobby and Mr. Green) hovered on the roost with tails down, and kinda had that "am I next?" look to them - catching the boys was not a particularly traumatic experience, but they had their world rocked. It was certainly quieter - we'll see how they work out their new pecking order. The GNH boys have lived as a trio without too much fuss for over a year now (they tussle a bit sometimes, but nothing injurious). Hoping these boys will be similar.

I know, right?! Laughed so hard when he said that. Loved the variety of folks they decided to follow (and talk about their whole lives, not just the chicken parts). And yes, the birds were gorgeous. I was a little irritated about it being all about bantams (being a LF gal myself), but I got over it. When I'm tired, I remember that guy working 12 hour days on the motors and then coming home and working with his chickens in the dark... And I don't feel so bad.

I am SOOOOOO with you on that. And the older I get, the more I get irritated with people in general. (Hence the "Get off my lawn" under my avatar.) And I REALLY would like to have a day just to read. Maybe next week if I get enough chore stuff done this week.

(I really DO need that t-shirt that says "This gal likes chickens, and maybe like 3 people.")

Sorry to hear. :(

Well, as I said, all the boys are tucked up with water only, the cooler is scrubbed out and filled with ice (should be just the right level of ice water tomorrow, if not I can add water), fishing table is scrubbed, scalder is scrubbed, tools and cone ready. Only thing left is to cut some of the greenery that has impinged on the processing area tomorrow morning. The nice thing about using the brooders as holding pens is that I don't have to rush to do it all at the crack of dawn (though I want to start early if I can). It's supposed to be a cool, rainy day all day tomorrow, so kinda perfect for processing. I needed to do it sooner or later, and had already made the cull priority list before all the fuss, so might as well be now.

I'm going to start winding down and head to bed soon...
I'd come help ya if I weren't so far away! I have plucked chickens a couple times in my life actually. Wasn't the most fun I've ever had but memorable to say the least. My favorite time was helping at my in laws house when some middle school age boys who were new to town stopped by with my step son to visit. They were from the city and had never seen the likes of someone killing chickens in their back yard. They were mesmerized and mortified at the same time. They wanted to know what we were going to do with them after we plucked them. Already having met me as their lunch lady I couldn't resit. Lol lol lol. Them boys graduated this year and still talk about that to this day!

It's neat looking at all the parts that make birds tick.
