Morning Everyone! Day 20 today for my incubator eggs. Woke up to one already hatched this morning, and another hatched at 8:00. 8 more pipped.

The chick's attitude can be the difference. There will be some who just give up and nothing you do can help. And then the next one will be a scrapper and make it with flying colors!

I had to move my roosters and I thought they'd be ok for a night or two in the barn. A rooster got attacked. I have him in a kennel for his safety and he's been on his own since he could drink electrolytes. (This happened at the same time I hurt my back so I couldn't bend down) He can finally lift up his head and eat on his own. He's going to make it on sheer will alone. He's a cull but we'll see if he gets moved up the ladder. I value spirit just as much as anything. Without it...there's no survival.

Amen! When I have one I can has the will and tude, I give em all I can.

Clears at Candle are not Always Infertile​

Always break open clears before passing a verdict on fertility rates, especially if the eggs are shipped. Early deads are easily mistaken for clears when candled and sometimes they will be fertile but fail to start. Sharpies on Eggs? Sure!​

It's a question nearly as old as the proverbial which came first: can you safely use sharpies on hatching eggs to mark air cells or identify breed? Some BYCers have decided to take this to the extreme and colour the entire egg with multiple colours of Sharpie. Results are quite strongly indicative that it has no effect on hatchability.

Someone should write a short article on assessing a clear eggs fertility after incubation. I feel it's a not exposed subject!
