EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Sounds like it :D I think that was the one that took forever pipping. It hatched sometime in the night.
Every one I've held so far has white on it somewhere; one even has a white belly. Kind of surprising considering BCM hens are solid black, Roosters don't show white, and black is usually dominant (at least in dogs it is) Far as I know, BCM aren't sexable at birth, so what's with the white? :idunno

A lot of people refer to BCM chicks as "penguins". Bits of white down is very normal on them, even the entire belly. It's when the white persists into the adult plumage that is considered a fault and a problem.

@kwhites634 these were my BCM babies at hatch

That's nice of you to send her pens, I'd think they are more valuable than the eggs. I actually have a mini lathe with an extension. I haven't made anything useful with it, but I can make a mess really quick when I want to. :lau
New eggs are on their way. Supposed to be here Saturday night. Hopefully it will be Saturday morning so I can pick them up.
Going to have to dust off the pen making equipment and get them sent. Needed to do that anyways as a friend of mine is retiring and I want to get him a set.

Love everyone's beautiful babies! Unfortunately my hatch with the 2 first-time broodies is not going well. I went out there to check on them at lunch time and found 2 chicks that had been killed. One looked bloody, the other looked squashed. There were two healthy chicks there also, and I brought them inside.

There are 2 eggs left with no pips, might throw those in the incubator also. Not sure what happened with the broodies; I think either the EE hen was just too aggressive or maybe it was because she had only been sitting for a week. At least I saved 2 anyway. No pips in the incubator eggs but it's Day 21 today so there is still time for them.

Here's the lucky 2 that survived psycho broody:
One is a jubilee Orp, the other looks like a dark blue one

My three broodies are in their on different egg batches but the one is going to be a week ahead of the others I'm hoping they don't abandon the eggs cuz I don't have an incubator. My only incubators have feathers and right now one looks like a big feather duster, must be in ''lockdown.'

Well in the goat world, my treatment seems to be working well with the boer yearling.

I got my quad and twins disbudded with shots and Tattoos last night. I'm glad the vet does the actual iron cuz I hate listening to them scream.
:fl my one day milk test starts tonight wish me luck especially with my Copper Hill doe that they let get mastitis last year. She's giving me about a gallon a day or a little over out of half an udder she's going to be so close. Hopefully her butterfat is good enough to push her over the edge. Since she's out of a 9 star milker it would be a total shame to have that all lost. It's such an inexpensive thing really in reality that it's a shame people don't do some of that stuff, but I had to get her paperwork all fixed because somebody didn't want to pay that $4 to transfer her mom.
At least the weather should cooperate.
It's supposed to be in the high 60s and sunny which be an improvement.
