EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

He didn’t make it. Sometimes it just isn’t meant to be, I suppose. He had given up hours ago, but I kept pushing.
so sorry. I truly know how hard it is when you do everything you can and it's just not enough makes you wonder if there's something you could have done that you didn't know to do, but you're right sometimes there's just something wrong and it isn't meant to be. I lost a very important doeling like that last year. She just was never right and died by day two. :hit :hugs

Morning all. Thanks for the kind words yesterday. It was raw for a minute but then I was ok. Right before we tubed the second time I asked Sally if it was better to let him pass instead of keeping sticking him. She said to fight for him, so I did, even though he had already given up. He died warm with a full belly. Nothing much better.

The others are good. I got #1 to drink 2oz milk and he was dancing around looking for more, then ran straight to mom and nursed vigorously. #2 screamed while I dripped milk on his tongue, no sucking at all. He got 1/2oz. #3 was a mix, sucked a bit and also screamed while I dripped milk on her tongue. She got 1oz.

All have gained 4-5 ounces since birth. Gertrude is very attentive and wakes them up to eat, and makes sure each one does. One side of her udder is hard and seems sore when they butt her, not sure what the issue is. It’s not hot or red. The milk looks like the milk from the other side, not pink or yellow. I’ve been advised this might be the beginning of mastitis?

you are a good goat extra momma, I'm glad the others are doing better.

sometimes one side is overly full or hard and they can't nurse on it and the more they nurse on the other side and not the one where it is kind of hard the worse it gets. I usually end up milking the too full side out or down(one that they are not keeping up with). I even had one that produced so much milk we couldn't nurse at the beginning. I had to milk part of it out and then feed it to them. I would watch out for mastitis though but sometimes it's just a full and borderlines that.
you are a good extra goat mama. I am glad the others are doing better. it almost sounds like they were a little small early sometimes the quad thing

Anybody have any experience with Little Giant incubators with digital thermostats? My mother bought one for her classroom (without consulting me as to whether she should buy it or not :th). I'm running tests on it using a thermometer I trust, and it's weird as heck. One end runs 1-2 degrees cold, one runs 1-2 degrees hot, unless my thermometer is freaking out of course. I'll have to bring a second thermometer to test with it to double-check.

I’m afraid I don’t sorry. :fl
