EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I really want to taste an Elk! NEVER in my life had any kind of venison...just can't find them here.
Deer taste more..gamey..because of what they eat.. a lot of thistle when it's still green here makes them taste real gamey. Oh, and we eat the fat. Not much fat to eat on a deer though. Elk eat more grass/weeds than brush and ceder like deer. So they do taste better. I remember processing a big ol boy in our kitchen once with the help of my mother, Aunt, and Uncle. Once was enough! Man that was a lot of meat! Everyone went home with a fair share.

I'm not sure about this but you can't eat the fat of deer so I imagine that is true of all venison. Humans supposedly can't digest the fat.

Nope, not so! Lots of people just don't like the fat. A lot of the gamey flavor comes from fat.

I grew up on game. I'd estimate 90% of the non-restaurant meat I've ever eaten has been deer or elk. One benefit of growing up in Montana!

Gamey meat has as much to do with the hormones of the animal as it does the diet. If an animal is frightened and running when it's killed, then the meat will be more gamey. That's why a skilled hunter prides themselves on clean kills--it's as much for quality of the harvest as for bragging rights. If it is a randy buck or bull it will be more gamey. They have glands on their legs that should be cut off immediately and thrown as far as possible before gutting that make the meat gamey.

On the other hand, my husband's cousins won't eat the beef from the ranch where they work because it tastes too much like "monte," or mountain. Those cattle spend most of the year on high mountain pasture, and you can definitely taste it.

I hate the ads on this site. I just googled porterhouse steak and now the right frame on BYC is filled with photos of beautiful juicy steaks.
What are the odds this came up on its own. :lau

Although juicy steaks sound much better. Part I really hate is when speaking with someone in person and advertisement match your conversations.

One more week till I can ultrasound goats. I swear when you want time to go slowly it flies by, and when you're waiting like this it seems yo take forever. Definitely the watched pot.
It looks like I got four of my six AI breedings. :fl
I will be very excited if they all took. I bred 1 doe to Woest-Hoeve FC Tommy Boy who is the full brother to the National Champion (also the full uncle to my good buck Boon). I only was able to get 10 straws of him before his sister went National Champion twice. they only had about forty straws from him as he was a young buck. Fortunately, I found him before his sister went two time champ. I bought the 10 straws to use on the daughters of my buck for line breeding.
The other three does that look like they took are bred to My-Enchanted-Acres Leading Man. I got the semen last fall as another way to bring in more of the old Iron-owl dam lines, and the sire is a famous grandson of Kismet Marvins Smooth Operator s named Playboy so it ties other parts of my breeding program together too. The doe that took reserve National Champion is kind of like his 3/4 sister they have the same mother and but one of the same grandparents on the other side. There's only one animal different in the grandparents and that one is related to the other so I am not sure exactly how to describe how related they are.
I am very excited to get things out of both of these and then combine it with my buck, his daughters, and then them back to their uncle. it is going to be a process, but I'm bringing together the disparate parts of my herd and interestingly enough two parts of my plan ended up at the top of Nationals the last three years. We shall see what happens.
And I HAVE YET to have a screaming doe in heat that I can even tell! The bucks only recently started to stink. weird they are running late, but they say the weather wants to run warmer through to nov. could this be what is going on>?

@Akrnaf2 Shalom! I hope your school week has been better. I could really use some suggestions of what to do with this Jerusalem artichoke. someone suggested years ago to plant something new and try it okay I've got a bunch of it now what do I do with it?
@Sally Sunshine which are your favorite oils for like a face or gardener's soap?
I make Charcoal soap kids zit soap lol, of course my main oil is Tallow, coconut oil, olive, castor, you should add after trace.. bentonite clay, charcoal of course, fresh honey, witch hazel
oils for zits: I use mostly Lav and tea tree
  1. Lavender essential oil.
  2. Tea Tree essential oil.
  3. Ylang Ylang complete essential oil
  4. Bergamot essential oil.
  5. Carrot Seed essential oil.
  6. Frankincense essential oil.
For gardeners soap I do coffee frozen and milk and add lye in slow. and add the grounds after trace as a scrub in the soap. More coconut oil as its cleansing of the oils. but you need to superfat with a good oil to moisturize thereafter.

Oils I get all over, I find favorites different places, no one in particular.

It's been a hot minute since I've been around huh? Father in law is getting us an extravagantly large greenhouse which will make planting MUCH easier. Halloween soaps go up on the website October 1st, I have some really special things I'm doing with the designs this year. Kiddo is sprouting like a weed, he's already shot past three feet tall and he's running around in 2T clothes. When I start making the Christmas soaps in October I'm going to be starting a YouTube channel with soap making and soap cutting videos, posting the first videos in November. Been super busy all around.

In chicken news I'm hoping that next year we'll have gotten everything set up for four pullets. We have the space, even with the greenhouse being put in. Our breeder has Ayam Cemani and some other Asian breeds I want to look at. Our neighbor already bought some of his Malay Game Fowl X Cemani crosses from the guy and a couple Cemani hens, I'll see how they do over the winter before I consider them.

Ohhhh message me your channel then!! how exciting!

...
Perhaps. We usually have some cold weather by now. It is getting into the 50s tonight for the second time since summer. Monday and Tuesday are supposed to be in the 90s. Very unusual. At least our summer was milder than usual.
