EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Just replaced that one, so know it's good.

Brand new electrical components can be faulty. I just thought I would let you know that.
Working as long as I have as an industrial electrician and automation engineer, I can't tell you how many things that I've had fail right out of the box.

California code now requires child proof (as much as that's possible) outlets. They have plastic protectors inside the outlets such that if one side is push on with say a key it won't allow access. It takes both sides being pushed in to work.
Interesting.
I remember a big safety program where they didn't want any electrical panel left unlocked and every junction box or any box or cabinet with live wires had to have every possible latch latched and every knockout hole plugged.
On an inspection they found an uncovered knockout hole and demanded it be covered immediately because someone could stick a screwdriver in the hole. My female co-worker said, "yeah, if they're stupid". They said, "yeah, people are stupid."

I was once told to remove a no longer used run of conduit that was in the way of some new construction and the conduit was to be reused elsewhere. I started to take it apart and it was full of water (and wiring). Several gallons of water came running out and before I cut the wires I decided to doublecheck that it was de-energized. I found the end of the run at a push button station. Opened it and found that it was still energized - with 480 volts.

Never trust what someone else tells you.

OMG! I'm gonna die. My house is 44 years old & we have 2 bathrooms, neither of which have been modified in any way.
You're grandfathered. (in more ways than one
gig.gif
)
It isn't till any changes are made that you have to follow the newer NEC rules. Homeowners don't always follow the rules but licensed electricians have to.
Even old 2 prong ungrounded outlets are legal as long as they haven't been replaced with a 3 prong outlet that remains ungrounded.
I've been forced by inspectors to replace the 3 prong outlets with the old fashioned 2 prong ones.
They idea is that if using a cord or appliance with a ground wire, it must be grounded by the outlet. That way only things that don't need a ground (like a lamp) can be powered by that outlet.

they have a metal she'd with no way Inn these where in there little outside pen and I forgot them out on Hollaween night
The predators are always afoot (or aloft) just waiting for us to make a mistake.

Remember the old coffee & peanut cans with the slotted key on the lid, where you had to slide the slot over the metal tab on the can & turn it, creating a coil of metal strip around the key? They fit real neat into outlets. Don' bother to ask how I acquired this knowledge.
tongue.png
I remember getting sliced up good by those metal coils on several occasions.

I think I'm sick.fevery of 101 and then with two ice pass a cold towel and a fan it's going up now 101.2
I hope you feel better soon but what are ice passes?

I know but some don't so we have the government to save us.
Reminds me of ocaps discussion of eugenics.
Over reliance on regulations doesn't adequately thin the herd of the 'can't fix stupid' crowd.

I remember a writer saying one of the things she loved about Costa Rica over the U.S. is that they don't require handrails, guarding or warning signs everywhere. They expect people to be smart enough to avoid hazards all by themselves.

Always wanted to see the sun set over the Pacific....BRT
I guess you've seen sunrise over the Atlantic.

I'll try to find the picture I took of a tall sail ship perfectly framed by the sun as it was setting in Puerto Vallarta.

As a kid our family went to the beach monthly. Mom loved it. Since leaving home not so much

What's brt
The first place I saw the ocean was the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi.

...

The Monarch butterflies are on the way through on their migration, and they were swarming around the viburnum in front of my house. So fun!
love.gif

Oh, and I was looking in my butterfly book - you remember that caterpillar that looked like bird poop that I fed to my chickens? It's the larval form of the giant swallowtail.
barnie.gif

I'm going to do a read back. BRB.

- Ant Farm
Nice.

Was looking through the butterfly book again before bed - I was wrong. Though the Monarchs are indeed on their way through, these aren't Monarchs (for a number of subtle reasons) - they're Queens/Tropic Queens. Still pretty, though. (My CDO compelled me to get up out of bed, wake up the computer, and correct my error.
lau.gif
)

Pretty. Tiger swallowtail, I think. We have those too sometimes. (I want to get better at this - I sense a new hobby coming on - Nooooooooooooo........
th.gif
)

OK, really going to bed now. Good night!

- Ant Farm
I could be wrong but they look like Viceroy butterflies to me.

Did you know that Monarchs taste bad to birds and Viceroys are delicious?
Since they look alike, birds avoid both.

Beautiful! I would love to see a monarch swarm! Around here, they are becoming harder and harder to find
sad.png
I'd love to go to the mountain in Mexico where they overwinter.

I find Monarchs to be one of the most unique creatures in the animal kingdom.
It is one thing for Birds, mammals or fish to migrate like they do but altogether another for an insect that only migrates to its wintering grounds 3 to 5 generations removed from the one that traveled there the previous winter.

..

There were a lot of efforts this year to plant and distribute milkweed for them...

- Ant Farm
We have several organizations offering milkweed seeds and plants around here.

141 days, 14 hours, 34 minutes, and 47 seconds until set date...
For what hatch?
I hope to be hatching by Christmas if not before. Depends on how large the pullet eggs are by then.

I wonder how many eggs an oegb/silkie can cover
To be safe 5 LF or 7 bantam eggs.
Just keep putting them under there till you see some peeking out then remove one or two.

Good morning all.

I am so glad it's Friday!

My rooster has decided that it's completely acceptable to crow at all hours of the night. Is this normal?!?
He is either awakened by some noise, vibrations or light.
It is normal if there is light or a thunderstorm.

It's really getting old. Usually starts about 11:30 and continues through the night.
I don't know if my roosters are crowing unless I have all the doors and windows open and even then it isn't loud enough to wake us.
The place isn't even that big.

He would not lived at my place even 5 minutes! I CAN'T STSND THAT! That way I don't have them
I love waking to roosters more than alarm clocks. I just wish I could hear mine.

I learned how nice it was living in Costa Rica where everyone had chickens and just screens in windows - no glass.
I thought I'd have to have an alarm clock to be at work on time. Wasn't necessary.
The only time it was annoying was during middle of the night thunderstorms when lightning would awaken all the neighborhood birds.
the only problem i have with this broody is that i dont have eggs that i want her to hatch, she is sitting on (as far as i know) a golf ball, one of her eggs, and possibly 1 of my unbearded ee eggs

@Sally Sunshine i could really use some polish eggies
fl.gif
Are you getting eggs or are you going to break her?

Yes, It was a friendly boy.

Sadly, He was not accepted as an English major at UC Davis!

I tried to make him feel better about it.

He then followed me off of campus, likely to drown his sorrows at Froggy's Pub!

Last I heard he was found wandering in Down town Davis by the Cops and then chased out of Town!
Not good language skills?

I was at work--The boss does not allow animals in the building.

It would have been fun stuffing him into my honda civic and driving him to my house in Woodland. Imagine the stares on Hyw. 113 when they saw a Tom buckled into the passenger seat!
The coop fairy had 2 hen turkeys and the bank tellers wouldn't serve her until she went home and bring the turkeys up for a visit.

He is 20 weeks old. I never heard him, until his hatch mate was killed a few weeks ago, maybe he is mourning.
lau.gif

I do have a big light installed by the power company out there, but it has never been an issue before, and I'm not getting rid of that, it would be pitch black outside without that light.
YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS FILM ESPECIALLY NO 5 AND NO 2
ep.gif
Is #10 a condor or a vulture? I can't tell from the lighting.
#9 I hope to be doing that in February but while on my skis - not tumbling.
#8 What were they thinking.
#7 That stuff happens around me more than people want to admit. I've seen it.
Is #5 in India?

We are in a severe drought. Please send a little to me!!!

Sometimes you can be tired in a good way

Morning Mel!
Ever wonder why the powers that be don't build water pipelines like they do for oil?

My uncle used to ride through Paducah with a whitetail doe in the passenger's seat of his truck.
That would be fun.

He actually lived in Lone Oak, before he moved to the farm in Boaz, if you know where they are. His oldest daughter & her DH live in Paducah.
What did the surgeon have to say yesterday?
I know this isn't the DYK thread but did you know there would probably never be a place named Lone Oak in MO?

polish
lol

i only have mutts

ooh or calls!
I've had several varieties of Polish. Very cool looking birds but I wouldn't own them again. They're just not predator proof enough for my liking. Same with Sultans, Houdans, Silkies and others.
I just don't have the proper housing for something like that.

hey sll i hsve a broody on bantamm on two eggs a blue ee egg and a white leghorn egg
Young man, do you ever reread your posts before you hit the submit button?
Please look at this one and tell me how many errors you see. I can point out at least 7. 4 in the first 4 words.
I'm sorry but it makes your posts extremely hard to decipher.

i see how/why it went extinct!
lau.gif

It tasted just like chicken.

that video things.... #2 was freaking sad.

the one with the cops, the guy was resisting arrest, and while it looked brutal, he kept pushing back and away from them and wouldn't do what they asked. even from the video clip, I could see his hands come up and him move towards the black cop, which is why he defended himself. Once he was on the ground, he wouldn't put his hands behind his back. They used the force needed, to arrest him. While it looks freaking brutal, I'm guessing he's not as beat up as it looked. They were just trying to get him subdued. It's not pretty when someone won't cooperate. :(

A vulture 5 seems to me like some zoological park in China, or Philippines I think 8 were the last in line when God divided the intellect.
