EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I'm only getting 1-2 eggs a day from my flock at the moment. I have about 20 laying hens (not counting pullets, roos, cockerels). My older girls have already finished their molt but I swear, they're in bed by 3pm, before my kids even get home from school! Only the young ones stay out til it gets dark around 4:45.

Today I got 6 from 30 older hens. 4 from 8 pullets. The day before only 2 from entire group but I didn't get to feed the night before due to getting home late all were in bed by then.

The last few evenings they have been inside by 5 but up till then I was having to chase them in at quarter after 5 with a flash light. So much for chickens being afraid of the dark. I think they figured out the coop was warmer than outside.

Up until today I have one lonely little 9 month old hen that was giving me about 5 eggs a week. I started turning on a light for them from 3-6 just to entice them inside and hoping that the three pullets I was hoping would start to lay this month would do just that.

Bless em, they started laying on their 6th month birthday.

I was turning the light on for mine in the evenings but it hasn't been bright enough out to keep a good enough charge through the solar panels. The light drains the battery after a couple days even if it's only on a couple hours in the evening. I need more solar panels lol.

No lights for mine yet. Speaking of no lights fell asleep on couch so I'm off to bed. :frow

Glad you received deposits on the other two kids!
Thanks. With these three selling I have paid for the does, and will only have to pay myself fifty bucks for keeping the extra doeling :) I would rather have kept Ruby's daughter, but the young 4H girls are likely going to talk me into letting them have her. It seems they have one that looks like the light headed doe so their mom is pushing for the darker headed one while each girl likes one or the other. I really want the darker headed doe simply because her dam is the crazier one I may need to sell and wanted to handle the daughter. I guess I will cross my fingers for another doe if I am a push over.

Good night everyone. I seem to have fallen asleep in my chair again. Off to real bed. Sleep well.

You just need more daylight, Jess, like all of us. Wanna petition the gov't for year 'round DST? I'll sign.

can u feed it to chickens
DE is known to be ineffective as a dewormer and is known to cause slicosis of the lungs. I have used it and just from breathing it in for a few seconds it hurts my throat. Just think of what it would do to your birds eating it all the time
