pullets become hens at 1 year old. Cockerels become cocks at 1 year old. Pulleys start out laying eggs smaller than normal and as their reproductive tract matures the eggs become larger. Generally this take 30 to 90 days for the eggs to grow in size from the time they begin laying to what you would expect from whatever breed you are setting eggs from.Which leads me to a question I've never thought of - how old exactly is a chicken when she is considered a hen and no longer a pullet? Mine are 11 months old - were those PULLET eggs I just set?

Quote: Oh, ok. Well, most of the 9 eggs are pretty large, maybe just one that is pullet size. Thanks!
Didn't fire say that the early hatchers would be mallard crosses?

Even that Sting was a teacher, an history teacher I think!
He was an English teacher. (The fact that I know that without looking it up/Googling it probably means that I need a brain enema...)![]()
Quote: Ditto. I have actually gone into this whole thing very clear on the finances. I had two large dogs - rescue greyhounds - for 12 years. One with health problems, one healthy until the end. My food costs for the chickens are much less, and between vet visits, boarding, and other costs, the dogs were a lot more expensive than the chickens have been (even including coop construction). I just changed the line item title in my budget. I still keep an eye on it, but at least for me, big dogs as pets were more expensive. And they didn't lay eggs...

Boy, am I glad is week is over!!!!! I haven't gotten enough sleep in quite a few days (and I'm one of those folks who really needs my sleep, esp. as I've gotten older). I'm also emotionally exhausted because we are doing the periodic evaluations of our trainees and I put a lot of energy in those discussions, esp. for those that need improvement. (At least no one has cried this year - yet). All I want to do is fall asleep NOW. But instead, I'm heading out to do some chores. (I think - part of my brain is telling me that I could do them in the morning but I really shouldn't). Will power it tough when you're tired.

Oh, come on! Insulated overalls, choppers, a nice coat, something to cover your face, wool socks, and warm boots are plenty. No oxygen tanks required.

YES!! So exciting!!Hey Banti did you see I got my first goose egg? I will probably do staggered hatches from now till everything quits laying eggs. So excited![]()
