EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I would rather save them all! My kids are on them like hawks! You know, that doesn't too good...I mean it's spring break and their eyes are glued to these eggs. Their mama chickens' first hatch.
I understand that but it has never been the case that 100% of animals survive birthing or hatching, even in humans.
Commercial hatcheries that have the very best equipment and management techniques rarely get much over 90% to become viable chicks.
That's with ideal nutrition, egg collection, temperature and humidity controlled environments during storage, meticulous gradual warming to the setters, spot on temps and humidity, periodic auto cooling, perfectly timed movement from the setter chambers to the hatcher trays, et. al..
It's survival of the fittest and If your temps have been way off, you'll be lucky if any survive.

They hatch a million eggs a week in these facilities and if they can make any changes to improve hatch by 1%, it means millions in profits. But they'll never get 100%.

Saving all of a hatch is not very realistic. Use the event to explain life and death in nature and whatever your religious beliefs are.

I cannot tell if there are veins. She is taking big breathes.

I think she is still absorbing yolk, give more time,

As in opening and closing her bill? That means yolk is still absorbing.

@DwayneNLiz you've hatched ducks before, can you help her out please and danke?
hi

So the quail chick egg that my nephew cracked open has internally pipped but I can see blood

has it pipped through a vein? It's not finished absorbing the yolk as it's beak is opening and closing
its still absorbing, yawning is a good sign, if it just nicked a vein it should be ok

Don't start helping too soon and compromising others
