EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hi All,

I was a few hundred pages behind, but every time I try to go back to read them, the system kicks me out. For everyone that is currently breeding goats - did you already have goats before this thread on BYC got you interested, or are chickens and this thread a gateway to raising goats? Some of the baby goat photos are WAY, way cuter than any baby goat I've seen around here. Who was it that had a premie - how is the baby doing?

I gave 4 of the 10 RIR I hatched to the broodies. When I checked them this morning, 2 of the RIR and 1 silkie were out and about. The black silkie baby was nowhere to be found, but I was only there for a few minutes - the other 2 RIR were nestled in feathers - their coloring makes them stand out. I'm guessing that's where the black silkie was - but it blended right in. I did a little better at closing off their coop. There was some openings just small enough for a baby to sneak out, but not big enough for mom to follow.

Chrissy says "shame on you."
LOL, I do feel some shame...

. BUT I have enough dealing with muddy feet with my silkies, when it rains - I don't want all the muck that ducks create. I will own ducks vicariously through all of you!!!!

Yes, I already had goats before this thread.Had them about 7 years now.

I hope the broody hens take good care of the chicks!

So are you the instigator of all these goats?

So far, I just got a call that they found one of the RIR babies being pecked to death. It's hanging in there, but it's up in a little hospital wing at home, getting nutradrench, and some TLC. Not sure if I should leave the other 3 or pull them all back.

I will take some for dinner.
As to goats I have had them for I think four years now, maybe three and I love my goats. I had them longer than the chickens. I bought them to deal with Briars and weeds and fell in love. Besides the fact that they cleaned up my pastures wonderfully.

No, of course not.

Sorry about the chick, I hope it pulls through.

How much space do the broody hens have and how many others in with them. Mine tend to want plenty of space, and are pretty good at keeping non mama hens away. Roosters typically help with that too.
This is my first broody pile. There are 7 hens in there, they have been sitting on eggs for 4 weeks now. No other hens getting in there anymore.

They are all silkies, but none of these have brooded anything before.

They are all in this coop and small run area. They don't use the actual nesting box in this, they are all on the ground, in the back right corner.

When I get home, I'll keep an eye on them. Anyone that seems to be bothering the babies, I'll take out of the area. Unfortunately I have the rest of the broodies over here....

That just doesn't look comfortable to me - fortunately it's dropped to the 70's today. It was in the 80's earlier this week and it was HOT in there.

@Jessimom be ready to separate broodies, they get jealous and will fight over babies, or peck others to death if they 'think' it's not theirs

:hugs and :fl
