EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Camping, what kind of gimpy? Splay legged, twisted toes, what are the symptoms?

I’ll just show you. It’s a little of everything I think. Breeds are giant cochins and silkies. Breeder said she’d never had so many from one hatch. I’m going to keep them inside after I move the rest (buff orps and colored egg layers) to the big brooder.

All five:

Cochins: one has a very swollen foot. One isn’t very bad at all and seems most likely to recover.

Very bad:

Silkies: the blue is the worst. Very weak, lighter than air. I gave it a dropperful of water and that perked it up.

The white can balance on the good leg, looks like an injury? Dried blood on the hock.

Swollen foot? Weird. I am not sure what would cause or treat that. Got Band-Aids you could use to bring together the legs of the splayed birds?

Are its toes crooked when standing? Hard to tell from a back photo. Sounds good to me.

It doesn’t stand. Toes actually go over the wings/back somehow. Cup and sling? There are so many treatments and they’re all time-sensitive, so I don’t want to waste energy on the wrong thing.

Back photo was injury to white silkie. Blue looks like a nightmare bat.

Hey y’all. :frow Anyone here still an expert on leg issues in chicks? I got a bunch from a breeder and she gave me five gimpy ones for free. I don’t really want to clog up the emergencies thread. I read a podiatry link or two, but I’m not confident enough in diagnosing. I gave them all a drop of poly-vi-sol.
If they are still just a day or so, there’s plenty of hope. Even without treatment.
Shoes and splints sounds about right.

Not really an expert, but what kind of leg issues? Something that needs a hobble?
