EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

My joy at hatching all of my viable eggs is dampened slightly by my candle of the other dozen I had going--you know, the filthy ones that got bounced around the county by the postal service.

8 blood rings, 3 clears, and 1 lonely embryo.

I think it was a combination of factors--the shipping (despite being done as recommended by Sally Sunshine), the fecal contamination, and I put them in a cheap incubator and kept fiddling with the heat because it wasn't maintaining temps.

What do I do with a lone baby, if it makes it? Will it adapt alright having siblings that are two weeks older? We have no fall chick days here, so I can't just pick up a buddy for it.

I suppose there is no point worrying about it now--I don't know if it will even hatch.

No more Ebay eggs for me!
I try to never purchase shipped eggs farther from an adjoining state. and always fresh fresh eggs and requested shipped as you tried. I have hatched many dirty eggs. I think your air cells were rolling, when you suggested you cant see them I had thought that immediately. nothing you can do about them, if they are truly rollers from end to end rolling, I have yet to see one hatch. many can hatch from loose, but detached nah but I always toss them. I dont want to have to baby chicks, I want the strongest chicks I can get from an egg. Sometimes I swear for the real bad ones, it may be better to just let them go a week before turning just a tad, and keep them upright once started upright, only laying at lockdown.

Despite the size difference, it really does depend on the older babies, and the amount of space. If nothing else, put a clear or wire divider between them. I will give you more ideas when I’m done driving myself insane with stuff here.
I was worried about adding the shipped silkie chicks in with the ones I hatched out in the coop, but they were fine. they all hang together now.
but they do always have a small area to run under the nest boxes to get away from the bigger ones should they want to.

I am ready for bed already, had Teagan from six this am until 330 and then I made 6 loafs of soap, three honey almond and three lav with pink salts. I ran out of shea butter so I had to stop ugh I really need to buy in bigger bulk, but dang house is so small!!!

I keep getting messages that people want to come to shop here. I dont have a soap shed or a store or anything, and the places that carry my soap dont carry much inventory. I really would like something here but I really dont want to deal one on one with people when I have so much going on all the time. Half the time people are scheduled to come and I have to reschedule because of kids or something or other. Like taking a major tumble thursday after kid got her braces on. I still hurt pretty bad. sucks getting old and they should really fix that sidewalk. Next person may not be as nice as me.

I don't post a whole lot but I'm really excited for band season this year lol. Brendon's first parade of the season was today...They're doing a "Haunted Highlanders" theme this year and it's going to be a ton of fun. They have tombstone props and some kids are being zombies for the halftime show this year lol. This is from the Fireman's Jubilee parade today :)

Gosh darn it, I lost my favorite chick. It had amazing coloring, and I was thrilled to see how it would turn out. This is the first hatchling I've lost. Why did it have to be this one? :hit

On another note, I'm having a REALLY hard time convincing myself to wait to hatch again until spring. This is so addictive! I even looked on Ebay again, lol. Logic shall prevail, because I want to either get more local eggs, or order from the place I got my first eggs from (all the eggs that didn't hatch were my fault). And I don't want to fuss with babies in frigid temps. So I'll wait. I mean it, I'll wait!

I’m convinced. :lau
