EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Never mind. It absorbed all the way after about 10 minutes, and is now looking and behaving normally! I have one more I'm assisting, but I'm waiting for veins to recede further before I pull back more membrane. I'll have gotten 3 chicks if they all stay healthy.

I think I had two problems: low temps, and too low humidity. 3 quit between day 17 and pip, 1 pipped internally and died, and these 3, two of which are assisted hatches. I'll keep this incubator (Janoel 12) for emergencies, but I'm going to go back to using my Brinsea, even though I'll have to turn eggs manually.

Speaking of which, I set 22 eggs in that today!

I have 3 healthy babies! The one I opened but left to mature made it out on its own during the night. I opened the others for eggtopsies this morning. One died several days ago, one was ready but never pipped due to malposition...and one was still alive! I put it back because it was bleeding, but it won't get out on its own because its head is tucked away from the shell. I need to know if I need to risk more bleeding to get its beak out so it can breathe, or if I should just leave it alone.

Made a 1920s dress from an extant drafting guide, and I have a 1950s Simplicity skirt pattern I'm currently working on and a basic bodice pattern I want to draft. Also working on sizing down a vintage shirtwaist dress pattern I have that's a 14 1/2 (in vintage patterns I'm a 12-12 1/2 and in modern patterns I'm a 2-4). After I size down the pattern I'm making one with a solid dark green cotton I bought at Jo-Ann's that I adore. Pretty much as I'm making things I'm getting rid of items already in my closet, and stuff I like that may not have the skirt length or colors I like I'm setting aside to make patterns from.

How neat! I'm currently working on a vest and walking skirt combination based off of extant Victorian garments.

My goal is to eventually be able to make reproduction historical garments! We have an exhibit at our local museum that shows the insides of garments, and I love studying them. I sewed a lot as a kid, but it's been well over a decade since I made anything, so I am making myself start at the beginning.

I don't know. Its beak isn't exposed anywhere. It's facing the wrong way in the shell. View attachment 2046779
Well, that’s a tough call. In my experience, the bleeding could already have stopped. If you see the beak, wet your finger, and rub away the sack. Or, if the incubator is humid enough, the chick can break free easily enough.

It pipped. Through the side of the egg. And there is a lot of bleeding. I removed a bit of shell from around the pip, but left all of the membranes. It is moving and chirping a lot, but there is so much blood...I really hope it makes it, but I don't know how much blood a chick can lose and still be healthy. :( I'm just leaving it alone now. It will either die in the shell, or it will get out on its own. :fl
