600,000 gallons/day? More than 2,000,000 liters/day?? You are using an Olympic swimming pool of water every day!.....and who will pay it?
If it was my water district I would have to pay. Probably why they require owners to install. The meter was 20k and I don’t own the meter for that. I get the privilege of having their water for that fee. The bill for 600,000 gallons would sink me.
I didn't get all the numbers for every day since March but the lady at the water company went back in time and she said starting March 22 I was losing water 24/7. One date, May 10th, I used 5,000 gallons. The volume kept increasing till apparently the leak blew out the gasket on the fitting. That was when the numbers skyrocketed and probably when I started hearing it. On the 19th, 465,000 gallons escaped, on the 20th it was 529,000 gallons, on the 21st it was 485,000 and on the 22nd it was 607,000. The lady on the phone said I would have to pay because the loss was on my side of the meter. I could apply for a leak abatement and then arrange a payment plan. On the plus side, the guy that fixed it said he put in his notes that they were at fault and not me. Time will tell.
I had overpaid a couple years ago and hadn't gotten a bill since then. When I get one it says,
'Do Not Pay'. It has always been a negative amount due. We get billed quarterly so I can't imagine what the bill will say but it has to be coming soon. I'll keep you informed.
I can imagine a bill in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I can't imagine when they started seeing unusual usage at those levels why they didn't try to investigate. Especially when they knew they just replaced the meter.
I spoke with a friend in Florida today and he said they have to make the connection on their side of the meter.
I think since they required a meter replacement here, they do the whole job. Had I not been home when the meter was replaced, I wouldn't have even known it happened.
