Greenthum89,

KLF73 is correct. Any chicken that lays a green egg has some other breed that lays brown eggs mixed in it's genetic background. Brown egg genes mixed with blue egg genes = green eggs. Some Ameraucanas and Araucanas may have a green tint to them but reputable breeders don't hatch those eggs and only select the blue eggs to hatch in order to eliminate the greenish eggs.

Actually, you can show any color. Colors that are not the "officially" accepted ones can still be shown under the "AOV" (Any Other Variety) classification.

thanks all i know about it is out of the standard of perfection book.

but other then that please look in the actual standard of perfection and see what it says about the egg colors that an ameraucana can lay it clearly states green as a color. and those reputable breeders? pips has white ameraucanas that lay green eggs and jerry desmidts bbs lay green eggs, the printed version of the standard says green is accepted along with blue

yes, but they aren't trying for green as a color. They are trying to perfect to blue. I am sure if you ask Jean, she isn't working for green, but rather working to improve the color to blue.

I ain't gonna get into that part of the discussion. My bantam araucanas and bantam "EE" all lay blue eggs, and that's the only egg color that concerns me.

Unfortunately, I can't speak to what the actual APA SOP says because I'm waiting on the 2008 version that is supposed to be hitting the streets sometime this Spring.

Having said that, I do want to say that just because a bird can be entered in a show does not mean it meets an APA SOP. Case in point was this last year at the Evergreen State Fair when a judge awarded BB to a bird that was obviously an EE. At first I wasn't too happy about that but when I saw that the bird belonged to a handicapped young boy, I was very happy for him. However, it just goes to show you that there is still a lot to be learned when it comes to true Ameraucanas.

Here is a link to the discussion on AOV: http://www.ameraucana.org/abcforum/index.php?a=topic&t=494

As far as I know, there are still only 8 varieties of the Ameraucana that is accepted by the APA and the AOV is not listed in the SOP for obvious reasons. For example, a Splash is not recognized by the APA because there is just no way to create a "standard" for a Splash. However, it is a recognized variety in breeding. There is just no way you could get it to breed true 50% of the time. So while the ABC may award you a AOV at a show, it would not count toward points for the APA.

Here is a link to a similar link earlier this month and I went into some detail that may be helpful to you here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1386341

Here is a link to what the President of the ABC says: http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/issues/2/2-3/John_W_Blehm.html about Ameraucanas

Here is a link to the Standards Page on ABC: http://www.ameraucana.org/standard.html Notice it clearly states that the bird "must" lay a blue egg.

The above links should answer all your questions however I would add one thing to my comments listed in the above link and that is to say that the "occasional modifier gene in a true Ameraucana" that shows up resulting in a blue egg should be understood as coming from one of the APA accepted authorized varieties.

I called one of the top breeders I know and he has a 1998 version of the SOP and he says the Standard is for a "sky blue" color. Greenthumb is correct when he or she states that the APA SOP is the absolute final authority. I would imagine that the ABC would look to getting the SOP modified if it in facts says the Ameraucana can lay a green egg as the ABC is calling for a "must have blue egg". I also know that those breeders previously mentioned are trying to weed out the modifier gene that is turning the eggs green (brown over blue).

With my own breeding, I am working on a variety of things of which egg color is one of the more important.

You may notice that I did not address the Araucana at all as that is a totally separate breed and one that I am not informed enough to speak about.

I hope all that helps.

God Bless,

Heck, it's impossible to get the whole araucana BREED to breed true 50% of the time -- but it's still APA recognized.

I have "heard" around the net that splash is now recognized in some breeds, but I don't have the SOP to prove it. I hope it is true -- I think it's pretty stilly not to, especially when breeding splash to splash will produce more splashes ONE HUNDRED percent of the time. "Breeding true" shouldn't have to mean "Breeding identical copies every time". Heck, if every BBR (for instance) were identical to every other BBR, there wouldn't be any point in showing them!

i went to a breeder, not hatchery last year and bought 18 ameraucana hatching eggs. all 18 eggs were sky blue to turquoise blue, not green. all of them turned out different colors. i had a hen that looks like the standard blue ameraucana. i had 2 hens that look like silver ameraucanas. i have a rooster that looks like a silver ameraucana with splashes. i had 1 rooster and 1 hen that didnt have beards. as far as egg color the silver hens lay green and the non bearded hen lays blue. i am hatching some eggs out to see if they breed true. what do i have? i payed for ameraucanas not ee.
