I have 6 Americana's and all 6 are different colors. I bought them at a hatchery as day olds. They are now 26 weeks and doing well. I visited our county fair and looked at the EE's on display. All where different. Is there a pure breed that all look alike? My 5 pullets are laying and all but one lays blue/green eggs. One lays brown eggs. I thought, for some unknown reason they would all be the same.
Any info here? John

I have one Americana and am just as puzzled as you. But I love the green eggs so I don't care what they look like.

They are a Mutt breed therefore no standard. We only have them here for fun eggs but I do know that there is a big difference between Ameraucanas and Araucanas.Hatcheries only have EE's no matter how they market them and Aracauana's don't lay all colors only Blue. Ameraucana's have a breed standard. Ee's can look like anything and lay any color egg. The differences are more than that but it can be confusing.
I just had a 9 toed feather legged one hatch this week. Not sure how many I have at this moment but do know I don't have 2 alike-from rumpless to 9 toes, feather legged to smooth, solid to wildly splashed.
They add a beautiful variety of colors in the pastures and are easy to live with. When it comes right down to it they are all Chickens!

I could not have said it any better myself. They are a mutt chicken. I do enjoy them. It alarms me how many people do not realize the difference between Eastereggers and true Ameraucana and Araucana fowl. I even see people on eggbid selling true Ameraucana eggs when they are really only Eastereggers. If you want to see pictures of true Ameraucanas go to the Ameraucana breeders club A.B.C. I think there is a club for the true Araucana too but I am not sure.

I can not stress this point enough to people. If it comes from a hatchery it is an Easteregger!!! Regardless of what they call it.
edited to say that I tried to put the above line in Bold writing. Guess I have not figured it out yet.

I am glad that you asked this question instead of marketing Eastereggers as True Ameraucanas.

I would love to have a really detailed "explaination" of the difference between a true Amerucauna, and an EE that looks like an Amerucana (approved color / pattern, slate legs, rose comb/ muff and beard, etc.) Mine appears to fit the breed standard, but eveyone says must be an EE 'cause it came from a hatchery. It was marketed as Amerucauna. Anyone out there willing to take the time to clear this up for a confused newbie? Thanks, Carol

cap1717,

Well I try to help you the best I can Carol. There are 8 colors of Ameraucanas in the American Standard of Perfection (Black, Blue, Blue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten and White) The leg color should be Slate with the bottom of there feet being White (Black Ameraucanas should have very dark Slate to Black legs with the bottom of there feet being white) Ameraucanas also have a beard and muffes and a pea comb.
You can all so go to Ameraucana breeders club for more info. on the Ameraucana.

Chris

Well, i wanted to know the same thing so i called the hatchery where i got my EE's and they said they have True Ameraucana males, all eight colors. They use those Ameraucana males with different female hens to come up with their EE's. Kinda neat. Then you get all different colored eggs instead of just blue ones.

When you see some of my girls you can see that one came from a blue ameraucan, the other from a silver and so on. Its neat to be able to tell which color of the Ameraucana Roo they had for a dad.

Some people act like the Ameraucana is hard to come by, but the hatcherys do have them and use them to get their EE chicks. Also, the EE came first and then they (breeders who wanted a solid color) chose 8 colors that they wanted and kept breeding to get a more solid color of each. Hope that kinda helps.

Thanks Chris, by this "standard" I have 1 true Amerucana hen and one EE. I did have an absolutly gorgeous Amerucana Rooster, but can't keep roo's in the city, so had to re-home him. My bird is the brown/ red variety. The (suspected) EE, I won't know for sure until she lays a (hopefully colored egg) has rose comb, no beard or muff, and an unusual yellow and black feather pattern, with dark slate legs. I think that leg color can be "confusing", by my girls are definatly "slate" rather than green, both have white (ish) bottoms on their feet.

Thank you all for the info. I think I got more than I was asking for. I really enjoy watching them and enjoy the colors. I have noticed they are much more unpredictable than my BO's and BA's. You never know what you are going to see. Thanks again. John
