Egg bound emergeny--is there anyone who could talk me through this?

Omgosh. I'm so sorry!! The calcium could work immediately so in the future, it's worth a try (calcium enters the muscle cells pretty quickly). By now there were probably other problems brought on by being bound up.

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

I think we've all lost animal companions and said, "Never again!" until someone (furried, feathered, scaled) reminds us that there are more good times than bad. The lows feel so unbearable because the highs are out of this world.

Like so many others on BYC, thanks for sharing your heartbreaking experience. As you said, the further you go, the more you realize there is more to learn. Some believe animals are here to teach us, they willingly take on the experience so that others can be saved. Gracie's loss isn't in vain...she taught or reminded us of what to do/look for/consider so other chickens/birds could benefit.

My heart goes out to you.

Beautifully said, ReikiStar. It is truly a privilege to share our lives with animals. All in all, I think we humans get the best of the deal. We're so blessed with their daily presence in our lives. My chickens give me a reason to get up in the morning, humble me with their tolerance of a giant in their midst and best of all, make me laugh. Such wonderful creatures they are. :))

"privilege" I couldn't agree more. I always said the earth and animals would be fine without humans, but us humans just couldn't live without the animals and nature to nourish us. I hope Gracie comes back to you in the next chickie you open your heart and home to.

Be good to yourself for the next few weeks, if you're thinking and feeling love for Gracie, it's harder to beat yourself up.

Everyone of these messages makes me cry. It is a wonderful feeling to be surrounded, virtually, but others who know what it is to love a chicken. I can't thank you all enough.

Pretty darn sure she's with howlinggood's Randy right now, in chicken heaven. She's climbing mealworm mountain and chomping her way through the forbidden-plant forest

I'm so so sorry for your loss. I've only been a chicken mama for 5 weeks but already I realize how attached we can and do get to our chickens. You're definitely not alone in your love nor your heartbreak.

Please know that Gracie not only helped you learn a valuable lesson, but also helped countless others who are reading this thread now and will find it via the search function in the years to come.

RIP Gracie.

Thank you for your words...I lost:
1 to a coyote
2 to a hawk (nailed both of them THROUGH the chicken wire and still had his leg stuck through the fence holding down the chick (coop is covered)
1 to a raccoon 3 nights ago

Still have 3 and tomorrow I go to pick up more now that I've got the coop fully sealed, although as I read I find comments from others stating chicken wire doesn't get the job done. Right now, I can't afford the yard cloth. My coop is 8x12

I hope you're right, Noobchick. I know I've avoided some real disasters after reading others' posts. Right now, though, it's a bit hard to feel very good about today's sad events as a positive. I know you're right, but it will take time before my heart believes my head.

And thanks, stargirl, for the mind picture. Endless scratch, lots of worms and beetles, no nasty parasites or predators. I know my Gracie is in good company. :))
