We have a flock of 8 Rhode Island reds. They are about 1 year old. I have 1 hen that is egg bound. I noticed her symptoms starting this past Saturday (4 days ago) with the runny poop and lots of poop caked on her back end. I removed her from the flock on Sunday after noticing her behavior- hardly moving, fluffed up back end, waddling. She has been in my garage since and has perked up a bit- she eats and drinks a little. As far as helping with the egg I have try the syringe with calcium 2x, a warm bath 3x and using gloved fingers with lube 3x. I can definitely feel the egg in there. Must be too big to pass. Her cloaca is a bit swollen now. I've become perplexed as to what to do with her. I feel like I've done everything the internet has suggested except piercing the egg and i'm not comfortable doing that. How long can she possibly live with an egg stuck inside her? Thanks all!

When you "feel" the egg, are you feeling it when going "up" or is it "down"?

If you have a vet that can perform an xray to see where the egg is located, that would be good. You may be feeling a mass in the abdomen instead of the oviduct.

If you haven't done so, add epsom salts to your bath water and massage her from front to back.

It is up. In hindsight I'm thinking that I may have been in the intestine with my finger because it felt like there was a membrane around the egg and I wasn't directly touching it. If I do it again today I will be extra sure to go "up" when I go in to feel it. I didn't have Epsom salts, I will get some this morning. thank you!
I don't have vet that we use, we're not willing to spend the money on the chicken for what that would cost; sorry if that offends anybody.

update Day 8: still no egg. I tried to feel it again yesterday and may have accidentally pushed my finger into it in an effort to make it budge. Also tried another bath. This morning I tried putting her back in with the other chickens and one of them was very aggressive towards her when she tried to eat or drink. I had to take her back out.

Thank you both for your replies. After this amount of time I'm not sure it matters if I can figure out what is happening to her. I read the articles but am still unsure what it is. I think today will be her last day, she is obviously not going to spontaneously get better. If it matters, in hindsight I think she laid a sandpaper like egg before this so if that happens to another one of the chickens I'll know what might be coming.
