Egg bound hen has pooped?

Hello BYC! One of my orp girls got egg bound yesterday. I’ve been giving her Tums and she’s taken multiple Epsom Salt soaks, but she’s still taking her time to get the egg out. She’s much better than how she was yesterday, she’s eaten and drank, and I just went to check on her and saw that she had pooped! Does that mean that the egg isn’t blocking her intestines anymore? From what I’ve read egg bound hens don’t end up pooping until they’ve passed the egg. I’m going to keep up the baths and such until she actually passes the egg, but does this mean her case is less urgent now? Thanks!

She is actively popping now. She just took a dump in her bath water.

It's a little less urgent since she pooped. Usually, the egg has to be blocking the vent to block all poop, and it's a far bigger emergency that not pooping.

Let your hen's behavior be your guide. If she has passed the egg or whatever material is blocking the oviduct, she will feel lots better very quickly and resume her normal life. Until she's behaving normally, keep up the Tums. You can skip the soaks and just place her on some warmed towels instead.

Please describe age and symptoms. Also what you did to verify binding and when was her last egg. Did you have a thread about it already?

I have panicked about binding (finger poke and all) and had it turn out to be broody! She got babies after that!

She’s much better than how she was yesterday, she’s eaten and drank, and I just went to check on her and saw that she had pooped!

Eating and pooping is not the norm for bound hens in MY experience. What do those droppings look like that she passed.. consistency, color, and amount/size? Where at? Is she in a nest box, separated, etc.

Tums works by fast acting calcium supporting the muscle. Epsom soaks absorb magnesium through the skin also in order to support the muscle performance.

Ingesting the epsom can cause diarrhea, for informational purposes.

What is she doing with regards to flock behavior? Tying back into the first question.
