Today I found French Fry and was not acting normal. She’s keeping to herself and stands or sits all hunched up with tail down. I gave her 600 mg of calcium citrate plus D3 already a few hours ago and just soaked in epsom salt bath and massaged abdomen. I’ve only seen her pass a little watery, mucoid poop today. I saw what looked like egg yolk and watery poop below her spot on the roost, but no egg shell or membrane that I could make out.

She was fine yesterday, not sure if she laid. She did scratch through a compost pile that hadn’t been turned in a while. I saw her nibble an egg shell before I shooed her away, I hope that didn’t make her sick. Her crop seems a bit full and squishy. Not sure what to do now. I haven’t seen her eat, but she did drink from a puddle when I ran the hose around 11 today.

Am I stressing her out keeping her inside? Should she go back out with her flock? She was keeping to herself and staying in one place.

Not an expert here, but a crop problem typically, if I understand right, means the crop is hard, not soft. I may be wrong here. If it's an egg bound problem, feel for the egg.

Thanks. I don’t feel an egg when I poke around her abdomen, but I’m really bad at this. Would it be obvious? I could feel inside if necessary. A little watery poop is making its way out once in a while, would that happen if she is egg bound?

I would continue with the Calcium for a few days, hopefully she will lay her egg.

Re-check her crop in the morning to see if it's emptied. Likely it's slow if she's having some trouble laying an egg.

Crop issues can be a lot of different ways - hard, soft, doughy, squishy, air or fluid filled, etc. the way it feels will often help you determine which treatment(s) you need to administer.

Hopefully she'll come around, lay the egg and her crop will empty.

Thank you, encouraging to see your response. No changes really overnight, crop may be a tich smaller and she did eat a bit of scratch and BSFL this morning. More water mucoid poop and urates under the roost in her spot, not great news. I’m thinking it is egg related, rather than a crop blockage, so I am treating it that way. Praying it is enough to get her to lay.

Looking for some more optimism here…French Fry has eaten a bit today and chatted with me today while inside for her soak. She even jumped out of the tub, I thought that was a good sign she was feisty. She still hasn’t laid and has the same poops as pictured, with little flecks of red sometimes now. Can a hen be egg bound for a few days and live?

Have you felt for an egg?

Keep up with giving the Calcium and see that she's staying hydrated.

Has she ever been dewormed?
I have felt for one but I’m just not sure how far back to palpate her abdomen. Nothing strikes me as obviously being an egg. I feel what may be one but it seems kind of far back and I can only feel it on my left, so maybe it’s an organ. I try to feel others to compare but they don’t let me feel around much before becoming antsy.

No never been dewormed. Could that be something that would explain a slow crop and not laying for a few days?

A lot more poop under the roost this morning than yesterday. But not good looking poop. Crop is smaller but now feels doughy. I’ve provided apple cider vinegar in her water and she’s eaten some coconut oil and plain Greek yogurt. I did massage her crop a bit and will continue to do so throughout the day.
