Hi all!
Excuse my newness...I'm going to try to post this pic (hopefully it'll work).
Bear with me these are rescue birds and I don't know a lot about them....
1) What type of bird , age and weight. --- ??
2) What is the behavior, exactly. --- we noticed that she had a bloody backside...thought she had been getting pecked...did some research and started thinking prolapse...talked to some folks and got the idea of coxy...anyway we separated her and are now trying to figure out what to do
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? ---we isolated her on Friday (4 days ago)
4) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. --- bleeding on backside oooey and gooey too! a bit stinky
5) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. --- the birds came to us on july 4th. they had a 2 hr ride to get here. they never stopped laying! we think that they were not kept in the best living conditions. she could have been pecked.
6) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. she is eating a complete food pellet and some kitchen goodies. the ag center suggested mixing food with milk to encourage her to eat more. did that 1st thing this morning
7) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. looks fairly normal...she is getting some drippy white stuff stuck on her backside
8) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? isolated. cleaned with water. applied preparation h. today nothing b/c we thought it might be coxy and weren't sure about cross contamination. the ag office said to discontinue the prep h and treat for coxy just in case....i bought the stuff but i'm unsure about whether or not to treat her ( it was suggested that i treat them all--6 hens and a roo - just in case b/c they were rescues)
9 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? we do not want to vet her. we would like for her to get better if she can if not, well....you know. it's my boy's first go at chickens and we would just like for her to survive
10) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
11) Describe the housing/bedding in use --- it's a good sized coop with a extra large fenced run. i thought theat they were getting to close to each other b/c they like to get under the coop when it's hot...bedding is pine shaving. who know what they had before they got here!
