Hi all!
Excuse my newness...I'm going to try to post this pic (hopefully it'll work).
Bear with me these are rescue birds and I don't know a lot about them....
1) What type of bird , age and weight. --- ??
2) What is the behavior, exactly. --- we noticed that she had a bloody backside...thought she had been getting pecked...did some research and started thinking prolapse...talked to some folks and got the idea of coxy...anyway we separated her and are now trying to figure out what to do
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? ---we isolated her on Friday (4 days ago)
4) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. --- bleeding on backside oooey and gooey too! a bit stinky
5) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. --- the birds came to us on july 4th. they had a 2 hr ride to get here. they never stopped laying! we think that they were not kept in the best living conditions. she could have been pecked.
6) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. she is eating a complete food pellet and some kitchen goodies. the ag center suggested mixing food with milk to encourage her to eat more. did that 1st thing this morning
7) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. looks fairly normal...she is getting some drippy white stuff stuck on her backside
8) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? isolated. cleaned with water. applied preparation h. today nothing b/c we thought it might be coxy and weren't sure about cross contamination. the ag office said to discontinue the prep h and treat for coxy just in case....i bought the stuff but i'm unsure about whether or not to treat her ( it was suggested that i treat them all--6 hens and a roo - just in case b/c they were rescues)
9 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? we do not want to vet her. we would like for her to get better if she can if not, well....you know. it's my boy's first go at chickens and we would just like for her to survive
10) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
11) Describe the housing/bedding in use --- it's a good sized coop with a extra large fenced run. i thought theat they were getting to close to each other b/c they like to get under the coop when it's hot...bedding is pine shaving. who know what they had before they got here!

well she laid an egg yesterday...it was streaked with blood.
she still looks to be oozing some whitish stuff. we cleaned her up again but, she does seem to be pushing her vent out?
it's still pretty gross.
i would appreciate any thoughts.
thanks

Hi Spell,

I don't have experience with prolapse, but i have saved some posts that i thought might be helpful if i did have this occur. I will share them with you below. By Coxy, do you mean coccidosis? What meds have you picked up? Sulmet? Cordid? Does she have any symptoms of cocci? Her stool is normal, yes? Any blood in the stool? Is she acting lathargic, puffy at all? I'm trying to figure out why you were suggested cocci.

I cannot tell completly from the pictures, but from other posts I've read it looks like prolapse...can you tell if she has a broken egg inside her? That may explain the white leaking.....or i'm thinking it could be infection?? Again, just throwing ideas out there since i don't have actual experience with this. Read the threads I've posted below....very helpful information. If there is an egg broken inside her, you will need to treat for that as well. You use cool (not warm, not cold) water with a turkey baster to flush out the vent if you can get to it...

I would def. keep her isolated, put a teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar in her water (not a metal waterer). Give her some yogurt with active cultures. Make sure the feed you have is not just a "complete" poultry feed, but one designed for layers...and make sure they all have access to oyster shell free choice. Has she layed an egg since you noticed this? Can you feel if there may be an egg inside her?

I'm hoping someone else with more experience will chime in here, but in the meantime check out these posts...and make sure you are meeting the nutritional requirements for layers to help prevent this.

In the posts below there is a lot of good information on prolapse treatment and medications to use in the event of infection. I hope this helps.

Oops! Sorry, you must have posted right while i was typing my reply. The new egg, streaked with blood def. makes me think prolapse. Again, hoping someone with experience whill chime in on this one....but, read the posts and go ahead and try what you can.

andreas--thanks for the links. they were very helpful!
she seems to be doing much better. now that the swelling is down, i can see that it is most likely prolapse. the others just picked at it so quickly--they really tore her up!

now to reintroduce her to the others---she's been isolated since friday! --- little nervous.

thanks for the advice and well wishes

Hi spell,

Glad to hear the links helped and that she was doing better. I would love an updatte on how she is now. I'm terrified of prolapse, and it seems to be a reoccurring issue with hens that get it. Has she been laying okay now?
