Egg bound - when is it a lost cause?

We recent had a hen who was egg bound with a membrane over the egg. We took her to the vet and she said that it couldn't be solved at home since she was prolapse what she was pretty sure part of the reproductive tract. I highly suggest you find a vet if that's the case

@NottSun What was the outcome with your hen, please? :(

@fatcatx What was the outcome with your hen, please? :(

I have exact same problem, hen is egg bound but there is membrane/tissue over the egg so can't be helped out. Reluctant to take to vet as they don't seem to know much about chickens :(

Thanks for reply. What did the vet do? Were they a poultry specialist?
They weren't a poultry specialist but since we live with a lot of ranches and farms around they do know how to take care of ranch/farm animals. So the vet drained the egg the she had to make a small hole in the membrane to work out the egg shell. This happened about a day ago and so far my hen is eating and drinking. She is having us keep a close eye on her and increasing her mineral and vitamin intake. The vet said the hen should be separated till solid poop and a successful egg is laid and to call if anything happens.

We are also giving the hen some of her favorite treats to encourage eating.

I have a hen that I'm not sure is egg bound or not. On Sunday I noticed she was always fluffing her feathers and her tail feathers were puffing out. She's eating and drinking but today Wednesday I've noticed she not standing on both feet and opening her mouth like she's burping 😢 she's moving around and popping so I'm not sure what's going on. I was following your post to see what was best to try I did just give her the calcium pill so 🤞🏼

@Chickenmomma86 Sorry to hear that your hen is unwell 🙁
Has she missed laying an egg? Is she standing awkwardly? If you gently insert a gloved, well lubricated finger into her vent, you will most likely be able to feel the egg if she is egg bound. If so, put lots more lubricant around the vent, inside too and put her in a box, leave her somewhere quiet and see if she can lay it. Give her a warm bath first to relax her.
If she has one stuck and can’t lay it, she will go downhill in a day or two. Take her to a vet but be prepared for bad news.
I hope this is not your situation and that your hen gets well soon.
