Hi all,

I have a 1 year old hen that is possibly egg bound, but I don’t feel an egg. She just started to act ill this morning. She’s been in the nesting box all day, barely eating or drinking. Her comb has flopped over a bit and is purplish on the ends. She doesn’t have a “penguin walk,” but her vent seems to be straining. She’s pooped once that I’ve seen, and it was almost the color of an egg white and same consistency, but with a little more yellow. I’ve given her two Epsom salt baths today and tried to give her some calcium, but she eats very little. I’ve also manually felt for an egg but even if I go in a couple inches I don’t feel anything. Thoughts?

Welcome To BYC

How is your hen doing?

Feel of her abdomen is there any fluid, bloat or swelling?
With your description it sounds like she's not doing well and I'm sorry about that.
She may be having trouble passing a soft shelled egg or could be a lash egg (Salpingitis) or other reproductive disorder.

The comb turning purple is worrisome.

Do what you can to get her hydrated, see if she will take sips of water from a cup or spoon held to her beak.

thanks for your reply. Weirdly enough she seems fine this morning. Comb looks normal, and she’s up walking around. Could the heat have gotten to her and she ended up dehydrated for some reason? It’s been 90 here everyday for at least a week.

I would keep watch on her for a few days. To me it sounds like she was having trouble with a soft shelled egg.
See that she's drinking well and eating.
Hope she continues to be fine.
