Egg Carton Hatching Method Feedback *UPDATE*Tried It*Relults*

I will say that I didn't read this whole thread and I'm not really sure what started the "egg carton phase". I realize the goal is to try to get better hatches, but I'm not sure all folks will experience that if they don't resolve their faulty tools of incubating. For those it seems to be working for, I think that's great and keep us posted on additional successes.

I will speak from my own experience and years of hatching that I have neither used this method nor heard of it until recent posts. I have always hatched the traditional way of laying the eggs on their side as they would be in a nest environment. I often get 100% hatches and when I don't, it is usually my fault ora failure in my incubation controls. JMHO

I agree Jody, that in order to have a good hatch this way you have to have live chicks make it to day 21. If your temps and humidity aren't good throughout it's not going to make any difference how you have them placed in the hatcher!! I started trying this method because I was tired of chicks that made it to day 21 and then died. I'm sure it will happen again, but so far it's made a lot of difference.

I cut off the top of the egg cartons, but should I have cut out the bottoms of the individual egg sockets? I saw that someone did that on another forum and I just want to be absolutely sure that their going to be okay.

Thanks all.

Jody there are times that I hatch eggs on their side. Some times I find a nest that a Hen hide and started to set. I would meark the eggs then pick them up and lay them one their side on top of groves of the egg carton( they ones that I bought where made a lower than regular cartons. So I could lay eggs on side if I had to.)

I poked holes in the bottoms for ventilation and actually cut part of the separators out so that there is better air flow around the eggs. In effect, I am using them just like my plastic trays but they allow for more flexibility. I would say this method is like hatching in your turner, with the turner off and the clean up is easier.

Thank you much for resolving your issues, or at least taking them out of my thread.

As for the rest of you, thank you very much for posting your views and experiences! I read them with intense interest, and I believe that I will try a combination of the things suggested.

I am planning on doing half in a carton, half not. I will have a towel on the bottom of the hatcher, and before I go to bed at night, I will place the unhatched carton eggs with the others on the towel, possibly placing them back in the carton in the morning.

I will be sure to update you on my hatch when the time comes!

Thanks all for your participation!
