Hi - I'm new to the site and have been raising chickens for a year. My husband and I decided to take the plunge last year and purchased 6 chicks without knowing what they would grow into (assorted bantams). We purchased a coop, assembled it, placed it and waited for the babies to grow. They ended up being White Silkie bantams. They are so pretty and "fuzzy". By the luck of the draw, our babies were 3 males and 3 females. I don't know how that happens when the sales clerk plucked them each out of a large container with a lot of chicks. We lost one of the males over the winter but the rest have done very well.
We love gathering and eating the eggs, so we decided to purchase a larger, more sturdy coop and expand our flock. We needed a better coop because the one we purchased initially is literally falling apart around our chickens. This time, we put a lot of thought and money into it and decided to purchase the Formex Snap Lock coop. We haven't moved the flock yet but we will soon.
We purchased 6 new babies (3 red pullets and 3 other - I say other because they were white pullets mixed with Cornish Rock non sexed chicks and the man picking them didn't seem to know what he was doing. I'm not sure if we got the pullets or the Rocks - we'll see soon).
Anyway, we are excited (hence the cheesy title to this posting
) to create a new environment that is bigger and better for the flock. I feel like there is always something to learn, improve, change, etc. when it comes to chickens. The last year has been a fun ride and we are definitely looking forward to the fun to come over the next year.

and Welcome To BYC! Very pretty chickens, Silkies are such a fun and silly breed. Looks like your new chicks are doing well, hope you wound up with some nice egg layers.
