egg collecting question

I actually raise laying hens at the school I teach at. On the weekends the eggs are not collected. I haven't had any trouble. Over the long weekends I don't let the collecting go more than three days. I come out to check water and feed and give them treats. On occasion I have a broken egg but really no problems. I think 5 days is a little extensive. Maybe have a neighbor help out and pay him in eggs.

I visit my chickens every 1 - 2 days. An occasional egg gets broken and someone's eaten it, but noone has become a rampant egg-eater. I also haven't had a problem with the eggs beginning to set in the Texas heat. The worst that could happen is that a silkie will see the pile of eggs and go broody...again.

Are you planning on NOT checking on your chickens for five days???? If so, you could have many more problems than eggs... I check my girls twice/three times a day. I have several feeding stations and two stations with fresh water... At least twice a week, I find the chickens have scratched the bedding into the inside waterer (even though it is 8" off the floor) and there is no real water left or the outside waterer is filled with dirt. Chickens can not go 5 days without fresh water and food.. Even with auto water/feeders things go wrong... So, I would consider asking for help to check on the girls and to collect eggs... This is just my opinion...Dixie
