Can chickens lay different color of eggs? I have a Buff Orpington hen, Rose, and she lays a pretty dark brown eggs. I had to put a BO pullet in there yesterday and she should be laying already but hasn't yet, so this morning I was going to take J.T. ( Bo pullet ) back to the main coop and I found an egg. J.T. should already be laying, but hasn't layed one yet. So I don't know if Rose or J.T. layed that egg! The egg I found was a light brown egg with tiny white specks all over it! That's why I wonna know if a chicken can lay a dark colored egg, then lay a light brown egg with white specks??? Any advice would be great. Thanks!

If you want to look J.T. over would do good too. Feel on the outside of her bottom. Near the back you should find the pelvic bones. If she is laying or going to start then you should be able to fit about three fingers between the bones. Hens do tend to stay in a close range of their normal but can/will stray. The white on the egg should just be extra calcium, but no worry it happens. How long have you been getting eggs from Rose? Is she much older than J.T.?

Yes, Rose 's eggs are almost round! This one was round like the other eggs she had layed.

Probobly Rose's. Different chickens can/will lay diff. shape and sometimes you will know who laid it just by shape.

Rose is about 2 or maybe 3 years old. I got Rose from Privett hatchery. J.T. hatched under a broody hen. But the broody quit setting on the eggs, so I stuck the eggs in the bator and that's were J.T. hatched! So I dunno who her momma was! J.T. was hatched:
Monday, May, 25th, 2009. That help any??? How old is she? Julia ( EE hen ) started laying last week and she is younger then J.T.
Julia was hatched: Sunday, June, 21st, 2009.
