Egg crazy

Very new to the idea of raising chickens and the idea of raising them in the backyard has always intrigued me. I love eggs but lately, many local people and stores have been literally gouging with ridiculous prices. So I feel raising my own is now in order.
I haven't begun this venture yet, just doing as much research as I can for now.

Egg prices, like any item, can vary and fluctuate a lot.....but if you are looking at getting into this as a cost saving measure you may want to look at the cost of that "first egg" by the time one does the construction of the coop/run, investment in the birds (either the cost of bringing chicks to the point of lay or the higher per bird cost of buying birds that are at the point of lay), feed, etc... Don't get me wrong - keeping chickens is a fantastic thing to get into, but it is very easy to fall into thinking of it as being a way to save on grocery costs when it is often anything but.

All that said, it does sound like perhaps the cost factor is more the straw that has broken the camels back to give you that final push into something you wanted to do anyway. Are there specific questions you have yet?

Welcome to BYC. I'm glad you decided to join our flock. If egg production is your main priority, I would suggest getting Black Sex Links, which are used by laying houses for brown eggs, and which are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Glad you joined us. Good info from Ol Grey Mare. If you plan to get chickens to save $ on eggs, then IMO you should just find a local who sells eggs. The cost of raising back yard chickens is more than the price of eggs, but the rewards are priceless if you really want the chickens for fun.
