I have no clue. I'd get just a few chicks to put under her to see if it works. It would probably be a good idea to check on her every so often to make sure that she doesn't eat them.

Hi and welcome to BYC, glad you joined! My first thought was that your broody only began eating the egg after it accidently broke underneath her. If your broody accepts the chicks that you gave her toDAY, she is an excellent broody indeed. Many (most?) broodies will only adopt chicks if the chicks are given to the broody at night, and the new family has all night to snuggle together. Enjoy watching your broodies raise their chicks; for me that is the most enjoyable chicken TV of all!

Good morning I have a broody who has been broody for way too long - she started with another broody who has hatched her eggs - I had been trying to break this broody bc she will only sit in the favorite box - I’ve named her Baracuda bc she is such a pecker when I’m near her nest. After she stayed broody for so long I finally just gave up and let her sit- I started feeding her flock grow and giving her water in the box - at this point she’s been broody for over 30 days - this am I went in and she was eating an egg but still sitting . Is it a crazy idea to just go buy some chicks to throw under her or do you think she will eat them?

Both she and the other broody would not accept them so they are now in the shed with the brooder … I have a friend who lost a chick to a fox this week so she is thinking of taking two of them after their vacation

Thanks fort he update! I am in the same situation... my broody ate five of her eggs in the last week or so. I suspect one of them broke by accident and she got into taste of them... or who knows? So I am setting an incubator tonight. She might be becoming dinner... unless there is a way I can be sure this craziness stops here. Before she becomes dinner, I might try giving the chick back to her once they hatch, but I am not feeling very confident. Seems not everyone is cut out to be a mother and if she eats eggs that she will lay in the future... what will I eat? Also, what are the chances, now that she ate eggs, will she eat the chicks? If I give them to her at night, how do I monitor the situation so if they are rejected they are not dead by morning?
