egg eating

today i found a egg in my chicken coop so i got it and i accidently dropped it and the hens went crazy and ate it they looked like they were attaking it why did the do this

I'm assuming the egg cracked and broke when you dropped it.

Think of chickens as feathered velociraptors. They saw food and went after it. Do you often give them treats?

This does not mean they are egg eaters. It does not mean they will purposely open a perfectly good egg to eat it. But if they see a broken egg, they will devour it. This is perfectly normal. Practically any chicken will eat a broken egg.
