My friend from the poultry extension of the state university had suggested that when I asked her about the vascular structure of the leg and if you cold cut an artery. She want referring to cutting the entire thing, but rather tying it off and then making a small incision and popping and digging it out. Of course in these things you do the smallest incision possible. If you have a helper who can pull the edges back, all the better!...but I mis-wrote what she was saying....she was just referring to the bleeding issue....and when its tied you make a little cut and see if it pops out...and a little larger if you have to dig it out...be sure ot have instruments. I shopped in the drug store for tools to get bumblefoot out and I use some great tweezers and a zit popper thing that is a loop to dig. ...be sure you have some way to scoop it out if its a mass of chicken pus. if thats what it is, bleeding wont be much of a problem...but have gauze and paper towels handy to blot.
I wish I could observe this surgery....maybe I need to go to vet tech school!
Okay, as promised, here are some pictures. Sorry I couldn't get a better view without pulling some feathers - not something I want to do! It is connected more than I remembered. It is still 'floppy' but I can not touch my fingers together through the entire area.
The scabbies were already there. So either she's been picking at it, or she got picked on & this is an infection from that.
poor gal...looks like infection to me...but maybe one of the more experienced members can look. Its not yellow, so....?
I would take it out.
I will forward this to the medical people I know and see what they think, but I cant imagine that it doesnt need to come out....maybe you can try some soaking or warm compress and see what happens....shave it a little if you can to get the fluff off....only if you feel up to it.
Thanks for the pics...I feel for her!
Spider bite, or that's what it looks like to me. The two scabs, with the swelling, looks like an infected spider bite. Gross....looks like my ankle did when I got a spider bite years ago.
I forgot to mention that if anyone wants to see larger versions of these photos, I'm happy to email them directly to you. I used my Canon SLR to take them, so I had to reduce them quite a bit to upload them to the site.
I'm inclined to agree with cocosandy - I'd start by applying warm compresses. As it already has lesions, there's a chance you could get it to surface, fester and drain.
try warm Compresses, several times a day, on for 20mins, if that doesn't work in a few days, you could probably soak the scabs loose in a warm bath, then see if it drains anything with more compresses. If not you can try cutting just between the scabs and see what you find.
and yes you can email or Pm the pictures to me. I will contact my Vet and see what he thinks.
